I am two months into 5/10 years Letrozole. Only noticeable Side is stiffness on getting up in morning.

I asked my onco if side effects are cumulative and if I might expect other effects to kick in months or years down the road.
she said not she said most kick in fairly quickly after starting.

any thoughts?

  • I think she’s right, I suspect you won’t get too much more in the way of ‘nasties’. But at least you know it’s working to help keep you safe!

  • Hi

My experience is that it happens fairly early.  I have been taking them for 8 months.  I have gone from 61 years old going on 40, to now going on 80!  I have stiff legs after sitting even for a short time, two frozen shoulders, stiffness in all my joints, hot flushes and prickly heat. But I am alive and live in hope that research will eventually give us something better.

  • Hi

I found that either the impacts were greater in the early days (been on the big L since Feb 2020) or that a change in brands benefitted me, either way I now have no side effects and did suffer from zombie walking and very painful knees when shifting fat bum from sofa for the first 2-3 months, then just sore knees till 2-3 months ago.  I think that maybe that the bisphosphonate infusions helped as well as glucosamine and lots of exercise.

  • I was very stiff at first, especially in morning - but have been taking fish oil and glucosamine, and whether or not due to that it has really improved.

i don’t think reading the long list of potential side effects helped me!  I certainly felt as if I had several of them over the first few months.

  • I had very bad pain in right arm and changed from Letrozole to Exemestane but this gave me nausea and diarrhoea.

Surgeon said that pain was possibly lymphoedema and she was right! Now back on Letrozole with few side effects, just have to put up with minor effects as lymphoedema has taken over.

  • Hi Sam,

My mam is on Letrozole . She is 80 and used to be fairly fit but now can hardly walk as her legs are so stiff. She says they feel like blocks of wood. They also go red hot and freezing cold. Are these the side effects you got and what make did you change to? X

  • What brand is your mum on? Cipla crippled me,  but Accord was a lot better. Most people find it the best of the genetics. X

  • Hi, I'm not sure but I will check. The docs day the problems can't be the tablets but I'm sure it is. Especially hearing everyone's stories on here x

  • Hi, As say some brands seem to bebetter than others ,but it is very individual. I did have joint pains and more hot flushes in the early weeks of taking Letrozole , but these seem to have subsided somewhat now. I too found Cipla has been the worst one for me up to now. Have just this week gone back onto the Accord make and the difference has been noticable. Unfortunately it seems to be a bit of a lottery as to which make you get from the chemist. I intend to have a discussion with the Pharmacist when the covid levels have gone down. xx

  • Hi , its as Kwissy says, just because one brand is good for you it doesn't necessarily mean its good for someone else.  My worse was the initial brand, Cipla, Accord was middling and settled on my fave - Dr Reddys.  I'd suggest just try one for a while and if side effects unacceptable move on to another.  Hope you Mum finds something that suits.

I now make sure that I get the brand that I want, combination of getting doc to state on prescription and kicking Boots into touch, independent pharmacists much more on board in terms of getting you what you want.  If they give you the wrong brand just refuse it & ask for prescription back (or to be released back into the cloud).

And I too would always challenge what docs says unless they've been through what we have!
