I have suffered with nausea really bad through chemo so the decision has been made to have last one next week and have surgery in 3 weeks is it really day surgery to have a mastectomy? The thought of what is to come makes me feel ill how do you cope?

  • I am due mine on 3 December and will be in one day out the next.  I have heard from many women on here and other forums that it isn't as bad as they expected and they felt much better than they thought they would.  I would need to be in hospital overnight as I live on my own and other health issues to be wary of.

    Hi Sara,

    A mastectomy isn't too bad at all. I had mine last June and it's healed really well. Pain relief was on tap if I needed it but I didn't feel I needed a lot. The hospital staff were wonderful. I would advise you book yourself in for an overnight stay just until the anaesthetic has worn off and you're able to get about more easily. I always feel lightheaded after it and a bit dainty until it wears off so the 24 hours after the op it's good to have nurses to look after you. It's reassuring they're checking your observations through the night. I'm sure it won't be as bad as you think. Nothing ever is. Pack a towel and toilet bag and loose fitting top to come home in. You shouldn't need anything else. Best wishes for a quick recovery.

  • Hi  I had masectomy no reconstruction, beginning July 2019 chemo followed 6 weeks later . One thing I was certain off was it wasn't as bad as my imagination was telling me .  Yes it's classed as major surgery but most hospitals give a nerve blocker so along with oaunkillers you are comfortable .  Once chemo started I would say with confidence masectomy was a doddle compared to chemo . 

    Take all meds offered no need to be hero lol and do exercises as given . Do try to look at op area it's not as scary as you think .

    Also I used button thru tops to ease movement .

    When you get home listen to body rest when needed whilst body recovers 

    Waiting is the worst time so try to distract yourself in the next three weeks .Again listen to body reast and eat when needed . Regain strength after chemo so some walks in fresh air . Plan meals to go in to freezer for the days you don't feel like cooking after op .

    You're stronger than you think we all are
