Hey guys,

I had my bilateral mastectomy yesterday, I’m a worrier anyways but how do you know everything is fine u see the dressing? I thought I heard a sloshing sound and then like a tear and now it’s painful where I felt that surely that’s not right? I’m not allowed to take the dressings off so how do u know there ok

  • I had a mastectomy nearly 4 years ago, so l can make some suggestions. It could be that the area is just coming “ back to life” Are you taking painkillers? If there is a tear, the dressing will show signs of new blood. My scar bled, butt the district nurse came on a routine visit and changed the dressing for me. I think l’d been too active. Of course if you are worried you could go to your nearest urgent care centre tomorrow. I did this after my knee replacement, when horrible things appeared to be happening. They took off the dressing, proclaimed all was well and put a fresh dressing on. I came home happy.

Try not to worry and best wishes.

  • Hiya yes I aM taking tramadol paracetamol and diclafenax. There’s no signs of new blood which is good but when I move I can hear sloshing which my husband can also hear is this normal?

  • Hi, its normal, especially if you had lymph nodes removed or don't have drains. I had mastectomy and lymph node clearance with no drains and everytime I moved it was really "sloshy" and very swollen. Took a few weeks to settle down. If you see any new blood or feel dizzy or have a faster heart rate then you need to ring your contact number from the ward for advice. Did you have implants? The tearing sensation might be from the mesh they use to secure them, or could just be the muscles pulling. Hope you feel better soon xx

  • Ok thanks so much for putting my mind at ease. I feel slightly dizzy but I think that’s the medication if I’m honest. Yeah to be honest I noticed a split in the mesh so you could be right there. No I don’t have implants as with new coronavirus rules my bmi has to be 30 or under and it’s 34 x x thank you so much for your advise x

  • No worries,  there's usually someone who can advise on most things xxxx

Its the weirdest sensation isn't it? Upside down

  • Yes so strange sounds horrible x x

  • Early on in my recovery, my surgeon actually said ‘sloshing around nicely’ to me, so yes, it happens!
But don’t ignore any new signs like temperature going up, fresh blood on dressings etc.

    Hugs xxx

    Moomy

  • Thank u, my breast care nurse said something about it being like a hot water bottle but I didn’t expect it to be so loud.
I am checking my dressings quite often they seem ok at the minute x x. X

    Thank u x x x
