Everything I eat or drink tastes like sludgy cardboard.

Help.......Tired face

  • Good morning......

Sadly, taste is often affected by the chemo. I still, five years on, have days when certain things taste vile.

During chemo I immediately lost the taste for coffee. It was just bitter. I don't remember if everything lost it's taste. For me , I think the tastes just changed and I couldn't face some of the new flavours.

I did like ginger ....which was good because I was sick. I know some people freeze things like pineapple cubes, which have strong flavours to suck between bland meals. Fruit jellies seemed to keep flavour too.

I was ok with creamy soups like mushroom or asparagus. Mashed potatoes which are fairly bland anyway so the brain's memory accepted that, simple cooking like roast chicken ir scrambled eggs but definitely nothing spicy for me as the spices all changed.

I had very small meals because as well as taste, I lost appetite so tended to have a soft cheese sandwich or something on toast. I didn't even really

Sorry, I can't be more helpful. Most of the taste does return gradually when chemo finishes but during I'm afraid my main recommendation is. ...trial and error. And one more tip ....If everything is being affected...Don't buy your favourite foods because the disappointment and the changes may put you off them forever. I remember  that happening to one poster last year.

Take care. It will be over soon.

    Love Karen

  • Hello, I bought some lemon barley water to drink and got some fox's glacier fruits to suck. Lots of water and I drink tea with sugar, don't normally have sugar but it seems like a treat! Take it day by day.

  • Funnily enough hospital put sugar in my tea and it was lovely.

  • Also get a soft toothbrush and be really gentle brushing your teeth. Years ago my dentist told me to only use a soft toothbrush and hold it at the end between my thumb and forefinger and brush lightly but for longer. This definitely helps stop you  damaging your gums. Gets a bit boring so I wander about while I'm doing itGrin

  • Hi try things you don't normally like I found it was more a change if tastebuds than no taste at all . I couldn't drink tea in certain areas because of changes in water ......who knew it could taste so different . As Karen said I found frozen pieces of fruit helped .

    It does come back

One step at a time and ...Breathe !
