Worried about advanced breast cancer

Hello, I am 52 years old and from the age of 40 I had yearly mammograms and ultrasounds. Two years ago when I went for my routine mammogram the gynecologist said that I will have an ultrasound every year but mammogram every two years, because is not good to radiate the breast every year, so I followed his instructions.  About 7 years ago I had a cyst in my right breast that shows every year and always remained the same size 0.7 mm so they never did anything about it. So I was classified as Birads 2.  Recently I had my mammogram and ultrasound. When the radiographer was doing the ultrasound I pointed where my cyst is and he said okay,I found it, nothing to worry about is very small, I already knew because every year they find it via ultrasound and is always the same size. When I went recently for my mammogram the results said recently seen probably bening solid nodule 0.8 mm (in the same area as the other one that I had 6 years ago) with discreet microcalcificacions in the same region of the nodule. MRI suggested Birads 4. Of course, I got super scared and went to talk to the radiographer. She said it wasn't the cyst, it was a new one and she just wanted to make sure. I asked that maybe I should have had the mammogram a yearly, not after two years, so it could have been court earlier. She said no, it doesn't make any difference. And where is the 0'7mm cyst gone. Can they just disappeared. Now I am worried that this nodule could have been court earlier, and that maybe now it's too late. I am scared. Coul someone advice? Many thanks x

  • Do you mean 0.8mm or 0.8cm?  Either way, they are both very small and I would think it has been caught really early.  Once they have a biopsy of the area involved they will know exactly what the area is.  Even if it is malignant, they can remove it quite easily and, hopefully, get rid of anything nasty.  You didn't say if they did a biopsy at the time or if you are awaiting an appointment with a breast consultant.

Thank you for your reply. Sorry I meant 8 mm, 0.8 cm. The radiographer suggest an MRI so waiting to have it done. Depending on the results then it will be biopsy. I didn't know if the size of the nodule was too big. I wished I did my mammogram last year, maybe it would have been caught when the nodule was smaller. But my gynecologist made me change it to every two years, because if radiation issues and now I have the nodule plus the microcalcificacions. The strange thing is that I always had a 7 mm cyst around the same area and the cyst is not there and I have the 8 mm nodule instead. Does discreet microcalcificacions near the nodule means higher chance of malignancy?  I just want to be prepared about what to expect so I am not shock if anything bad it's found . Thank you.

  • I wouldn't know if microcalcifications around a nodule mean a higher chance of cancer but it is still VERY small and calcifications are specks of calcium.  I think you are worrying yourself too much at this stage to think that it is cancer.  As I said previously, due to the size it can easily be removed if necessary.  My lump is nearly 5 cm and I'm just waiting for a date for a mastectomy.  I also have lymph node involvement and they will need to be removed too.  On the bright side for me, my CT scan showed that it hasn't spread anywhere else.  In regards to the cyst/nodule thing, the radiographer may have read the scan different than previous scans so it might actually be the same thing.

Please stop worrying so much.  If it is cancer it certainly doesn't sound as if it is 'advanced'.

Thank you for your advise.  How did you find out about your lump?

  • As it is quite large I just happened to notice it one day.  I had actually had a bath the day before and didn't notice it then so, to me, it just seemed to have appeared overnight.  I will probably remember the date I found it for the rest of my life - 4th August 2020.  I had been to my last scheduled mammogram but that was over 2 years ago. In fact, I think I was probably due for another around about now anyway.

So on two years it grew  5 cm? And have they done a biopsy? I can't believe in two years it can grow 5 cm. Because mammograms are usually very two years, in UK every three years.
