Hi guys, just need reassurance really.
I went for my first ever breast screening 2 weeks ago and yesterday received a letter asking me to go for more tests on Monday. I read the leaflet that came with it and realise it may turn out to be nothing, but that doesn't stop me worrying. It's the not knowing I think.
I'm sure many of you have been in this position. What can I expect from the next tests? Should I take the whole day off or just the morning when my appointment is? Feeling a bit scared!
Thanks x
Hi Redsky 1968 welcome to the forum.
This recall could be because they have seen something on the Mammogram and it may be something that is unusual but normal to you if that makes sense?
I imagine that you will have another Mammogram to compare it to the one taken at screening to compare the two images.
You may have a breast examination to check if anything can be felt on examination and a history may be taken by the folks at the clinic as well.
It is possible that you may have an ultrasound and a biopsy taken but this will only happen if the image is unclear or more detail is needed.
You should have some indication before you leave the clinic what they think this looks like and they will tell you that.
It depends I imagine what they want to do in the clinic as to how much time you may need and I'm not surprised that you are scared you wouldn't be human if you weren't its all the unknowns that are the worst and that is scarey . Please do remember though that we are here with you every step of the way so post as much as you need to to keep you sane in the meantime.
Do keep in touch and let us know how you get on on Monday as we will be thinking of you.
Sending some huge big hugs your way for now. xxxxxx
Thanks Gail, that helps make me feel a bit better. It's the unknown, even just the fact I've not been to that hospital before. I spoke to some workmates today and one had had a scares year or so ago, so she told me about her experience. She was clear in the end, so that made me a bit happier. I'll let you know how I go on Monday x
I was recalled from my first screening and the waiting was horrendous. They did group sessions so 5 of us there for recall. We all had repeat mammogram then called in one by one to see doctor. Two ladies given all clear and went home . One had cyst the other nothing showing on repeat mammogram again. They had checked her twice after original mammogram showed area of concern. I and two other ladies had biopsy. I was given appointment for results a week later. If you read my bio it tells you diagnosis in 2015. Year 3 at annual mammogram I had to have biopsy on good breast ! Came back clear - they decided it was a bruise after they repeated mammogram and nothing there. They have no bench mark for you do anything that looks a bit odd will be recalled and second view tell them if it's normal for you .
Hi , I was sent for following a routine mammogram just as Covid became apparent in the uk. I attended with my husband and we were asked to use the antibacterial gel before sitting on seats which were at least 2 metres apart. Other ladies arrived at intervals and we were called in one by one. A medical history was taken including current medications and a further mammogram carried out . After waiting again I was called in to have an ultrasound examination and then Consultant examined me. He could not feel the lump but it was visible on ultrasound.A biopsy was then taken under a local anaesthetic and a tag put in. My husband was then called in and we were told that it was almost certainly a cancer .
Hopefully you will only need to have the mammogram and examination by the Consultant and then be sent on your way. If that isn't the case can I reassure you that breast cancer is very treatable these days and I am living proof of that (see my profile if you wish) The other advice I would give you is do not look on dr google , he is often out of date or worse still just plain wrong.I will keep my fingers crossed for you on Monday . In the meantime sending big hugs xx
So I went for my tests this morning and found out I have calcification in my left breast. They did various tests which proved inconclusive so then did a vacuum biopsy. I get my results next Monday. From what they said, they don't think it's anything but they want to be sure. So another long week to wait, but I feel more positive now, if a little bruised!
Hi , Sorry to hear that you have to wait for further results, but glad that your team are being very thorough. The bruising will settle quite quickly I am sure. In the meantime be kind to yourself and do things that you enjoy and keep busy if you can.The waiting for results is the worst thing and I know that the days seem to stretch accordingly. Glad you feel more positive now and wishing you well xx
Hi Redsky believe it or not that could be good news depends on what those calcifications are and that's what will have gone for testing. Vacuum biopsies can be tricky like that sometimes they don't get enough of the calcifications so have to go in and do more. You will be bruised from this and the bruising may get worse before it gets better unfortunately depends how ungentle they were. A bag of frozen peas should do the trick to calm down any bruising but don't whatever you do put the frozen pack straight onto your skin-- wrap them in a towel first or it can burn your skin.
Prepare for celebrations if those results show watch and wait which they could do I have a friend who had the same as you and and she is well . Best wishes for the results and do come back and let us know how it goes.xxxx
So I had two areas of calcification. One 10mm one 5mm. Both biopsied and larger area DCIS, smaller area benign. They took 6 samples from each area so were happy with results. I had surgery to remove both areas for my peace of mind - they were not going to remove benign area. My surgeon did offer me watch and wait as many think surgery over treatment but that wasn't her favoured option and I concurred.
