Does anyone know if breast haematoma /abcess can mimic cancer on a mammogram or ultrasound ?

  • HI

I don't know the answer to your question as not medically qualified.  However- and I know this is so easy to say and not to do - you can't change anything by worrying.   You've been told that the area is suspicious and the only real answer will come from your biopsy results.

I was referred to the breast clinic and wasn't the slightest bit concerned.  It wasn't until they started saying 'suspicious' and taking biopsies that I understood it might be "something". (It was my first ever mammogram and I just thought I'd been referred because they didn't know my breasts!).  I had basically accepted as I walked out of that appointment that I had cancer and would have been over the moon had it not been.

I'm not trying to worry you, because this probably sounds dreadful to you, but if it's NOT cancer then you will be celebrating like mad.

If it is cancer, then don't think that "it's the end".  This group is the busiest on the Macmillan Forum for a very good reason.  Breast cancer is the most prolific and like me, there's so many of us hanging around on here - over 3 years ago for when I was diagnosed.  I also looked back after my treatment ended and I can 100% say that the FEAR of the treatment was much, much worse than what I actually went through.  I only actually took 2 days off work.  Cancer treatments (especially for breast) have come on sooooo much that perhaps back in the 70's it was mastectomy and hope for the best .... Now the survival rate is enourmous!  The treatment for my particular breast cancer had something new offered 6 months after I'd been diagnosed, that other ladies are now receiving, but wasn't available to me at the time - so it shows just how fast moving everything is.

Only use the main sites - Macmillan, Cancer Research and Breastcancer.org, for research as others can be woefully out of date or some just full of plain dangerous suggestions.

I do hope that it's nothing, but please remember, if it is then you can do this - your boys will have their Mummy around for many, many years to come Slight smile

    Kindest wishes, Lesley

  • The lady who did my mammogram last year said that little specks of deodorant can show up in the mammo so it is possible, but I’m not an expert, always best to ask a breast care nurse etc.

  • I had a biopsy at my year 3 mammo for a suspect area .  They asked me if I had knocked myself - I didn't know.  A week later told it was fine but they wanted to redo mammogram and they found it had disappeared so deduced it was a bruise.  I didn't have a lump but then I didn't have a lump first time just picked up on routine mammogram.

How much longer do you have to wait for results.  It's such a stressful time waiting x

  • Thanks for replying. Was told should find out next Tuesday. The days are dragging in
