Hi everyone
I am new to the group and have recently been diagnosed with a stage 2 ductal carsinoma. I had a similar cancer in the same breast 20 years ago so will have to have a mastectomy this time (You can't have radiotherapy in the same place twice)and will almost certainly go for a reconstruction at the same time.
I was wondering what I need to think about regarding night/daywear for the hospital and afterwards. Am I going to have trouble putting on a t-shirt like top? Will I need front opening pyjamas, tops etc? What about bras? Do I need a soft supporting sports type bra? All mine are underwired!
Thanks in advance
Polly
Yes, they suggest front opening pjs as you may have restricted movement on the mx side. I don't know if you have been advised by your consultant that you can have reconstruction but from other posts on here, I have noticed that, due to Covid, they are not doing reconstructions at the same time as mx. You will definitely need to have non wired bras. If you have reconstruction they will tell you beforehand what type you need.
Hi Pollymay
It depends on many things .. different hospitals have different protocols , and if you do have reconstruction that is also a factor. I had a mastectomy and immediate implant reconstruction , I was fitted with a bra in hospital which I had to wear for a week. I couldn’t get comfy and ended up wearing a vest top with a bra shelf in and found that was the most comfortable for me, I was advised not to wear underwired due to the small chance of the wire piercing the implant (I really couldn’t imagine how this would happen unless it is a freak accident) Two years later I had the implant removed and had a DIEP procedure , this was much less uncomfortable in the boob dept but more so elsewhere.
You will need front fastening things , I just wore the hospital gowns in hospital as it is easier for them when they are checking on you - my first op I was only in 1 day , the DIEP 5.
Hope this helps , this is a really quick answer so if you have any specific questions do ask.
best wishes

If you have loose-ish tops and put the affected arm n first and out last then you should manage. But I suspect they say no underwired bras because of sensory loss in the operated side? I still have numb areas over 2 years on. Bras need to be soft but supportive.
Hope all goes well for you, keep posting...
