Hello everyone, as well as feeling anxious/worried about things which Ive kindly had some advice from lovely members after 2 rounds of chemo I have suffered with a very sore mouth..dry and several ulcers.

The first time I wasn't really prepared for the pain of it all. The second time I have used everything..gel clair, pain killers, mouth spray/wash

Im due my third treatment tomorrow and Im beginning to worry about my mouth again.

Can anyone give me any other advice..does anyone know what order I should use things....to get the best protection? has anyone used manuka honey at all? xx

    1. Re: mouthwash. I was told to start the mouthwash ( non alcolhol based) from the start of chemo but not stop. Use it at least twice a day and on days the mouth is sensitive, as many times as I felt it start to tingle. I found that reaction mainly during the taxotere. So I did that.I used it from Day 1 until a few weeks after radiotherapy finished. I never got a sore mouth or ulcer. I know you can't start from Day 1 but you could begin today and keep going. Also ask in the chemo unit if the doctor can prescribe a mouthwash. Mine was not an over the counter dental wash. I know my non reaction might have been coincidence and I can never know that but I have read other posts from people who have regularly used the prescription washes having excellent results even after they had very sore ulcers before they started the washing regime.

I hope all goes well this month. This isn't an easy time but at least tomorrow you will be half way through!

    Take care. Karen

I ended up using the mouthwash (Difflam or a generic version supplied by the chemo unit) four times a day, brushing with a soft brush after every meal, and bonjella on any ulcers before meals. Drinking water seemed to help with a feeling that my tongue was suctioned onto my lower jaw.
