Hi everyone, can anyone tell me how long the op takes when you just have reconstruction (so, a year after mastectomy). Both for implant and DIEP (or similar) please. The thought of a long op worries me!
Hi
I can't answer your question but I noticed that your post hadn't had any replies yet. By replying to you it will 'bump' it back to the top of the discussions list where it'll hopefully be seen by someone with the right experience to help you.
Best wishes for whatever you decide to do

Hi
Can't help re implants but delayed DIEP recon will take 6-8 hrs. Its a long one as challenging to reconnect blood vessels and stitching up takes time. I'm due to have mine later this year so have a regular interrogation of my nurse on the subject.
I do however know that implants are far quicker (its an easier operation).

Hi
The implant reconstruction will probably only take a couple of hours, I had Diep (after implant which was removed in the operation) and i went to surgery at 8am and was back in my room at 6pm, like everything there is a wide variation depending on your own particular circumstances. Implant surgery you will normally be in just overnight, Diep is more like 5 days (I went in Monday, op Tuesday and out Saturday) Is there a reason why you are wanting to know the length of the op?

Hi
I had a mastectomy and immediate reconstruction and my op was about 8 hours. But, you go to sleep and the next thing you know you are in recovery. It is a very complicated and amazing surgery. I went in at 7am Friday morning, the op itself began about 8 am and came out of theatre around 4pm, and was discharged on Tuesday so 4 nights. It was the minimum time as they have to monitor you closely for the first 72 hours. It is a big operation and don't expect too much of yourself as it takes time to recover. You will need help at home to do things but you do improve and each week you can do more. It is an amazing op with fantastic results, well worth all the hassle. I had some reshaping by liposuction about 10 months after the Diep and nipple reconstruction. I hope all goes well. XXxx
