Prosthesis?

I had a mastectomy and lymph node removal a week ago as a day case.  I am recovering well.   The nurse at the hospital gave me a softie to put in my bra when I had the drains taken out yesterday.  Can anyone offer advice about other and  better forms of prosthesis?   There seem to be a lot of things available online.  Some are expensive but without seeing them it’s difficult to know what to buy.

  • You should be given a better prosthesis on the NHS once you are healed - my local hospital runs a fitting service ( when it’s not affected by Covid) where they have lots of different shapes, sizes  and types and they sort out something that fits you and your lifestyle

  • Hi  really good to hear you are recovering  after your op. Your nurse team should call you in for a fitting where they will give you a prosthesis on the NHS so wait for this before paying out hard cash. As  say they have a large supply of sizes and types and are experts at fitting you. Huge hugs for the rest of your recovery x

  • Hi

Welcome to site my story on profile just click on my name to read .

Glad you are recovering well ..your softie ( I called mine Doris ) is to use whilst you are recovering . The NHS should provide your prosthesis

( Clarissa ) lol . I was invited to a fitting bit like a shoe shop full of boxes except all had boobs on different size and shapes . I was advised to take good fitting post surgery  bra with pocket .

Also a shirt / blouse to see shape . Don't be shy and try several until you happy . Look at shape with clothes on that is what is important .

until then don't be surprised if your softie goes walkabout as you heal and swelling goes down . She could end up under chin RoflJoy

your prothesis is heavier and behaves better .

ive been using Clarissa for a year now ( six weeks after op ) and can honestly say nobody can tell and I don't notice either .

    take care

  • Hey Margaret, hope you're keeping well. Long time no speak!! Grinning

just to echo what the others have said. I was given the number after my op for the prosthesis lady to ring when I was ready. I was lucky enough to get in to see her in June and there was plenty of options to get the right size and shape. As Margaret, said, make sure you have good fitting post surgery bras before you go for your fitting.

I now have my own Clarissa, it's heavier than I expected.....seeing as it's not very big!!! But I am happy and confident with it that nobody can tell.

    xx

  • Hi

How are you ?  I'm off for Herceptin no 12 tomorrow like everyone else sick of covidiots . We've been in Cumbria for 15 days just back for treatment . Most probably back to Cumbria mid week . The covid numbers are a lot worse at home than Cumbria . So a lot safer sitting on our hill Joy

Must admit to being fed up of not feeling well I've had virtigo for 6weeks now which in turn affects my neck thru holding head stiffly . You end up feeling like your moaning all the time ...

Any way enough of that back to bras I've discovered pockets you can sew into your ordinary bras to take prosthesis on line .

So £8 for bra at a well known store outlet and £4 for pocket . Bargain last post surgery bra was £42 (lge cup )

Clarissa not being snobby and stayed happily in position ...result .

Hope you keeping well and safe

  • Hi Margaret  are you allowed to say which store for the bra pockets? x

  • Hi quite a few on line I used this one

     https://www.flowerbagslingerie.co.uk/31263/nicola-jane/cotton-sew-in-pocket-for-breast-prosthesis/

I'm on the look out for material now so I can make them lol

easy to sew pocket in ..hand sew so some give .

Flower bags brilliant pocket arrived within a day by post . Sizing a bit odd but if too big can be just sewn in .

Nicola Jane site has a sizing graph guide line .

    hope your well

  •  Thanks for the info Margaret...off to check out the link! Slight smile

All well here, hope you are too! x

  •  I'm doing great thank you Margaret. Relaxed Just had Herceptin/Perjeta no 16 on Friday, but feeling fine. Where did all those months go?!!

Sounds just perfect to have your own holiday haven to go to in these strange times, we did look at booking a lodge for a few days away but they were so expensive now everyone wants to 'staycation'.

That's a good idea about the sew in pockets. I started off with a couple of nice bras from Nicola Jane, who do have some slightly more reasonable prices I thought. Now I'm on the mailing list, they send me their sale leaflets and then I usually end up treating myself.....they know how to get me!!!

Look after yourself and enjoy the van in Cumbria. Hope the vertigo eases soon. xx
