My consultant surgeon stated my treatment plan for a small early, primary oestrogen positive breast cancer would be surgery/radiotherapy for 5 sessions/letrozole. There were traces in a lymph node but all has been removed successfully.
I am 'cancer free' following surgery on 25/11/25
Oncology have offered 15 sessions of radiotherapy but I have opted for 5 and they have been very open to the fact that I often don't react well to medication and will consider a change to a different medication if I react badly to letrozole.
My dilemma is that they have offered to also treat me with ribociclib for three years (a new protocol) and given me an information sheet. Although I am very grateful, I find the idea quite concerning because of the possible side effects and because my surgeon didn't consider it in his treatment plan.
I am going for my planning scan appointment next week and would appreciate hearing of any one else's experience of this and what questions I should maybe be asking next week.
Many thanks
Hi, I can't answer on ribociclib, but hopefully someone else with this experience will spot your post and provide some insight.
I took the 15 sessions of radiotherapy that they offered me and to be honest, this was the easiest of all treatments as I didn't have any fatigue or itching during the sessions. I'm also on letrozole and tolerate this fairly well though I do make sure I stick to the same brand.
Best wishes in making your decision on your future treatment.
Thank you.
Good tip on the letrozole brand. I'll remember that and good to hear you have not too many issues with it.
Thanks again and I wish you well
Hi. I’m not sure if you are asking for advice on the 5 sessions instead of 15 radiotherapy sessions or the ribociclib but I’ll provide my advice on both.
Radiotherapy- there was a recent trial (the fast forward trial I think it was called) and they found that 5 sessions of high dose radiotherapy was was as effective as 15 sessions in a group of women over 5 years. I asked my oncologist about it as I was also prescribed 15 sessions and he said the trial was in over 50’s. I am 42 so for my age group he said the 15 sessions were still recommended.
Ribociclib- I am currently taking the sister drug Abemaciclib which is pretty much the same. The side effects aren’t great for me but the results in trials are absolutely fantastic and I would recommend taking it. It is a highly effective drug in preventing recurrence and I feel very positive about it.
Thank you
That's very helpful. You are so young. I am 74 and I think will be asking about the age factor.
It seems that the the side effects for Ribociclib are more common than the 10% I was told about and again I will ask about age factors.
Keep up the positivity and I wish you well.
I think for your age bracket 5 sessions would be ok. Have a read of the trial and results and you could always refer to it when you speak to your oncologist.
The ribociclib was probably recommended as you meet the requirements (grade, in lymph nodes) but if the characteristics of your tumour show low recurrence rate then you could probably swerve it as the aim of that drug is to prevent recurrence and kill any hiding cancer cells.
