Hi everyone, I'm new to the group, had my lumpectomy and sentinel nodes out 10 days ago, I now have this cording, I read up about it and all info said phone my breast care nurse who will show me how to massage, and will probably put me in touch with a specialist physiotherapist, so I rang them and she just said push your thumb on the painful area and rotate, I really thought I would be shown as I'm not seeing my consultant until 5th Jan, she didn't seem interested so I thought I would ask here, is this the reaction others have had and did pushing the thumb on the lump help? Many thanks for any advice xx
Hello, sorry to hear about the cording. I was referred to a local hospice for painful scarring / cording and apparently you can also self-refer - is this something you could look into? Otherwise perhaps you could get an appt with your GP for some advice or ring the macmillan helpline?
Also, even though it hurts, try to keep doing your arm exercises as they should also help.
hope you can get it sorted x
Hi bobof, thanks for your advice, I have managed to get a gp appt but not until the 12th Jan, that's why I was hoping to be seen in the hospital as they stated come and see us if you get this! I didn't even get any after care/advice about dressings after my op, when I rang the breast unit, they just said that we told you all the info when you signed the consent forms, that was a week before my op and I had a lot going on with the diagnosis, they just said, see your gp? I feel very let down, just at the time I needed support, so I thought of this group, I will keep it going and I saw some videos earlier I will sit down and go through those, think Xmas has got in the way and they want to enjoy it....thank you tho xx
I had cording too. At first it was really painful and I thought it was my scar that was hurting. Once I saw the cords I felt a bit better about doing my post op exercises. Initially I placed my opposite hand on the cording as I was stretching as it seemed to ease the stiffness. I watch a video on massaging cording and followed the massage for about 2 weeks. They significantly reduced in that time and cleared fully after about 4 weeks.
I found it best to use a lotion to aid the massage. I swept upwards along the cords a few times to start and then pinched the cords between my finger and thumb and massaged them gently. Imagine rolling putty between your fingers. It gets easier each time x
Thank you for taking the time to reply, I'm definitely going to follow your advice and see if I can make a big improvement before I go to see the consultant on the 5th, I'm feeling that my whole body is hurting now , my bones especially seem very painful, so if I can ease the cording that will be a huge relief xx
Yes, it definitely helped me! I had a cord appear about six months after surgery. Looked and felt like a guitar string in my armpit! I kept massaging it with my thumb doing little circles quite firmly and eventually it made a sound like bubble wrap popping and eased after that. After that I carried on massaging in the same way up and down the cord for a few days until it sorted itself out. x
