Newbie here - waiting for lumpectomy, worried for the worst

Hi all.
I was diagnosed on 19th August. Grade 1 IDC 22mm est receptive.

I stopped HRT that day and started on Letrozole a few days later. Had a mag seed placement on 29th August and will be having a lumpectomy on 24th September followed by radiotherapy.

I think I am coping mentally, it’s just so surreal and I catch myself going to worst case scenarios.

I have a holiday next week (already booked prior) so hopefully can relax a bit before the op.

  • Hi, sounds like it's been caught early.  My advice is to have a lovely break, try not to worry and come back from your holiday well rested and ready for surgery. Best wishes

  • Thankfully the consultant said it had been caught early. I had my routine mammogram in January that came back clear. I noticed a slight identation middle of July and got it checked out. So glad for the ‘warning’ sign.

  • If your holiday is abroad just make sure your travel insurance provider is aware of your diagnosis and treatment plan and confirms in writing they’ll still cover you.

    Good luck with your treatment.

  • Hi  , lovely responses already, just wanted to add a hug and wish you a happy holiday! Definitely good to have a break and change of scene before your op. Your case sounds similar to mine, I used to repeat the positives to help fend off the inevitable catastrophising! (Not sure if that’s even a word but I definitely did some!) So obviously the best thing would be not to have cancer at all, but I did try to focus on: small, caught early, middle grade (mine was grade 2), oestrogen positive so was told very treatable.
This site is great for support and shared experiences - I’m still rattling around nearly 7 years post diagnosis! Love and hugs, HFxx

  • Hi,

It's difficult when you're going through this, but I am 3 years on from a similar situation and the 3 months between initial diagnosis and finding out lymph nodes were clear (and I could stop catastrophising) seems such a short time now.

    Enjoy your break.

  • Thanks for this. I had an itchy armpit last night and my head went all over. One good thing is that, compared to some other posts I’ve read, my NHS trust is quite quick with turnarounds and apparently my results will be 2 weeks post surgery.

  • It’s so easy to think every pain, niggle or itch is something bad. When I was diagnosed I had aces and pains in my shoulders and back and convinced myself it had spread all over (it hadn’t). All those disappeared as soon as I had surgery. I was also recalled from my first annual mammogram and started experiencing tenderness in my ribs so, again, I naturally jumped to worse case scenario. Turned out what they wanted to take a second look at wasn’t even on that side! Our minds can do funny things when we’re under stress. x

  • Hi Had lumpectomy 4 July and luckily was fine. Driving 2 days later ( is my right breast) managed shower, hair wash & dry no problem. Developed a seroma 3 weeks after op, which wasn’t sore just uncomfortable, phoned cancer helpline and was just told to go in and they drained it in minutes. Then it was just the wait for the radiotherapy to start which it did on 1 September, 5 sessions on full breast then 4 targeted at tumour site. Finished that last Thursday.

ive been fine so far apart from hot breast which is helped by keeping the moisturiser in the fridge. Hospital supplied the cream and I have used loads everyday, my skin is fine and I haven’t felt overly tired.
I am surprised at how easy it has all been, I was dreading the whole process.

    good luck

  • Thanks for the reply. This is really good to hear. I hope you continue to recover well x
