I am halfway through my chemo cycle and currently having my week off. Unfortunately all week my eyes have been sore and watering. I am really hoping that it’s not a side effect of chemo because I’m worried that it might stop my treatment. Please if anyone has experienced this could you please let me know if this was possible. Many thanks.

  • Hi Olliedog

  • Hi Olliedog,

I had chemo between July and September last year. I had watery eyes. It didn't stop my treatments. I thought I just noticed it more as I didn't have eyelashes that might have caught the tears previously. the eye, watering is probably a protective factor if you have no eyelashes.

I have some eyelashes now but find my right eye still waters a bit. Not enough to worry me but still occasionally happens.

If you have no other issues with your eyes then hopefully as mine was. Mention it at your next appointment. My team weren't concerned when I did

Good luck with your recovery xx

  • Thank you so much. I have been extremely lucky so far with side effect of chemo. Just some hair thinning and slight nausea so I’m not complaining. Just worried about treatment stopping so you message has helped.

  • Thank you. I really appreciate your input. I will give it a try.

  • Yes sadly I had it too, it’s quite common. I know it counterintuitive but I used antihistamine eye drops and also Theloz Duo eye drops, also take antihistamine tablets. It didn’t totally stop it but it really helped x

  • Thank you so much. I appreciate that you have replied. I was worried about it but as it’s quite common I feel better now. Did the hospital give you your eye drops and tablets or did you have to go to your GP.

  • I just bought mine, they may have something they can give you though. I’m pleased you feel reassured, chemo can throw up some strange side effects that you just wouldn’t anticipate. All the best x

  • Thank you so much . I have had my blood test today in preparation for chemo tomorrow and it is all systems go. GrinningGrinning

  • II’ve just had my 7th chemo round today and I have been prescribed Aapromel eye drops. I hope they help because my nurse said that it can be hit or miss. I’m hoping for a hit.

  • Hi Ollidog

I get dry eyes and noticed that they were sore after chemo.

I use Hycosan Extra. I don't think they have anti histamine in them, but they do lubricate your eyes and eased the soreness. You can get them from Boots, Specsavers or Amazon.
