Frightened

I was given the news that nobody wants to hear on Friday 10th January that I had breast cancer. I still can't believe it and often start crying . I have to have an MRI scan on Friday 17th to establish the size of the cancer. I am trying not to worry but that is easier said than done. Can anyone who has had the MRI scan tell me how long you wait for the results please.

  • Hi there, I'm one of the community champions on here and I wanted to welcome you to the club no one wants to join. Glad you've found the forum, it's a supportive and friendly place to get us through this.

Typically the medical team have what they call an MDT meeting, which is a multi disciplinary team of the breast surgeon, oncologist and other experts. They will discuss any scan results. I think most hospitals hold such meetings weekly, so it somewhat depends on both when the results are ready and when the MDT meeting is, as you won't hear until after that. I'd suggest 1-2 weeks is normal.

As you will have figured out by now, waiting is horrible. My advice is to try and keep yourself busy to distract your mind (easier said than done) and a lot of people often say when they have a treatment plan, it does get a little easier to handle.

if you need any extra support, the lovely folks here at Macmillan have a phone line, so you can talk about what you're going though. It's on 0800 808 0000, just in case you find this helpful.

A few hints for your scan. They won't let you have anything metal, so I found if I wore leggings I didn't have to take them off (retained a little more dignity this way) and remove  earrings etc before you go.  Also, if you lie really still the images will be more clear and they won't need to retake any, so that can make it a little quicker.  Hope this helps.

Best wishes for your scan today and your results.
