Hi all, I’m new to this group.  I was diagnosed with breast cancer, stage3 with nodal involvement 3 months ago. I’m halfway through dose dense EC followed by Paclitaxel. The Paclitaxel cycles  (first of 4) start tomorrow. Up til now, I’ve been very calm, proactive and positively focused.  Suddenly, I have taken a dove into gloom & despondency.  My optimism has left.  Is this usual? How have you coped? All advice welcome. Thank you.

  • Hi Yram

Welcome to the forum and I am sorry to hear that you have been diagnosed with breast cancer. What you’re feeling is not unusual, sometimes it gets all too much. I suggest if you haven’t already that you start a journal jointing down how you are feeling. Also do something you love to do to help take your mind off things.

Wishing you the best of luck with the rest of your treatment.

    Best wishes

  • Hi, I don’t know if it’s the chemo drugs or the situation we find ourselves in but during chemo my mood was very low. I guess I felt unwell, my physical appearance changed and psychologically I was dealing with a life threatening disease. In this situation I feel depression is not unusual. However post chemo, after a few weeks, my low mood improved and I regained some positivity.
During chemo I would meet friends and we would walk and sit outside and have a coffee. Exercise and some socialising helped.
I wish you well and hope your chemo passes quickly.

  • Hi Yram

we we’re all newbies at first but you will soon get used to all the terminology

I was offered EC after pacitaxile as I think because of my age the wanted to see how I coped  - I think you will probably find it easier than the EC.

After pacitaxil I decided not to have the EC as I was eager to get the surgery over with I had opted for a mastectomy without reconstruction.

the anticipation of everything is far worse than the actual procedure as your mind can run away with you.

i have had good help and support from this group so never be afraid to vent as everyone understands.

good luck with your recovery Xxx

  • Thank you Daisy53. I have a diary which I jot down thoughts and occasionally draw.  It does help to cheat my thoughts, although I got slack about keeping it up.  I’ll find it and bring it to chemo tomorrow. Great to have allies like yourself

  • Hi Shade, yes, your points mirror my experience so closely. It is so helpful to have such affirmation. Of course I’m going to ebb & flow. Great to hear that your gloom lifted - it gives me hope.

  • Thank you Skylark.  I try to stay active and looking outward. Naturally enough, you just lose energy and positivity from time to time. I do feel uplifted from the allyship of this group. Not bad for my first go on this forum, bless you all.
