Hi my amazing mum has just been diagnosed. The consultant suggested hormonal pills as a treatment but I have been ready up on this and they should be doing chemo. I’m scared as is she. Can anyone pls help clarify this?

  • Hi, I am 86 diagnosed last February. Since then I have had 2 scans, a mastectomy and 3 weeks of radiotherapy (15 sessions). I am also on Anastrozole for 7 years plus infusions to keep bones healthy.  I have come through it all and am feeling OK now. They sent a sample to America to see if I would benefit from chemo but it came back below the level for chemo and in view of my age felt that the side effects of chemo would be worse than the benefits.  I feel that I have had very good treatment and feel confident that I  can look forward to many years ahead.  I should press for a second opinion especially if your Mum is reasonably fit now. Good luck, Sue

  • Thank you so much for the response. Happy to hear you have come through this and wish you well. Did you have TNBC stage 2?

  • Mine was an invasive ductal  grade 2 at first diagnosis and then grade 3 after operation. The 9 year risk of distant recurrence is 18%. I feel that is not much different from anyone else getting cancer so hoping to be able to gradually put it to the back of my mind. During treatment it is always on your mind.

  • HI Lost5

Welcome to the forum and I am sorry to hear that your mother has been diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer stage 2.  I'm surprised the consultant has suggested hormonal pills as a treatment for your mother's cancer as triple negative is not driven by hormones so they wouldn't work on your mother's cancer.  I'd ask for a second opinion if I was you.

    Best wishes

  • Thank you very much. I appreciate your your thoughts on this. I will ask for a 2nd opinion.

  • Are you sure it’s TNBC and are you sure the l suggested pills were hormonal, not chemo? Hormone blockers don’t work on TNBC - it has no response to hormones. There’s a chemo drug called capecitebine that is tablet based. Was it perhaps that?  Or was the cancer triple positive rather than triple negative?

  • It is TNBC. Only had a very conversation with the consultant as we were waiting on other tests. Our next appointment will be the one that they confirm treatment. I want to be prepared and well informed and will be sure to ask the right questions. Thank you. All comments are very useful.

  • Hi lost

i think the Er 8 means it’s sensitive to estrogen and pr6  progesterone but is her-2neg so they would give hormone inhibitors .   It doesn’t sound like TN but if I was you I would right some question down to ask when you see consultant. Wishing your mum and yourself all the best
