Lumpectomy or mastectomy

Hi, new to this forum. Just diagnosed with breast cancer, not a lot of detail yet as waiting for biopsy result. Two of the options discussed as yet with surgeon are lumpectomy with radiotherapy or mastectomy. I last had major surgery ( hysterectomy) 15 years ago and did well. However I'm now 74 years old and unsure how I will cope with a mastectomy if I choose this option. Anyone near my age who has had a mastectomy on here, would be glad to hear how you got on. Many thanks

  • Hello

I have just had a mastectomy last Wednesday. I am doing really well . No pain at all . I am 65 and not big breasted so people won’t really notice . I am very happy with my decision. I just wanted it gone . Everyone is different and you need time to think it through. Sending lots of hugs x

  • I am 86 and had a mastectomy in April plus lymph nodes removal. I had never been in hospital before except for a bunion many years ago so was very apprehensive. However it was much easier than I imagined. I just stayed over night and had no real pain, just a bit of discomfort and soreness, They glued the stitches so did not need a dressing or drains. I stayed overnight and within a day or two was able to do most things. I had 15 radiotherapy sessions which were not pleasant but quite doable and was a bit more tired and sore after but 2 months later I am doing all my activities, I am out most days. I was discharged on Thursday but can contact the breast clinic if any problems.  I have had a soft prosthesis but am having a silicone one fitted in a week or two. I have been quite happy with my appearance and no one can tell.

Hope this gives you a bit of hope, my biggest fear was that I would come out of it unable to be active but am feeling about the same.

    Good wishes,Sue

  • Hi Rosie 28 thank you for your reply. I think  you're right I need a bit of time to think. I have two trains of thought, the lumpectomy is a smaller op but worried that further surgery could be necessary whereas with mastectomy it's done with. I'm fairly big breasted so would be lop sided but I'm sure I can live with a prosthesis. I'm glad you're doing well after your surgery. Keep on getting well. Thanks again for your input.

  • Hi Sue. Thanks for your reply and it's great you've done so well after your mastectomy. My biggest fear is that I'm not feeling very strong mentally or physically at the moment, a bit of a wimp, if I'm honest. So good to hear how you've coped with your surgery and treatment. Although I know several people who have had lumpectomy ops don't know anyone who has had a mastectomy so your input is very helpful. Keep on getting well and keeping well. Many thanks.
