Hi I’m new on here, my girlfriend (44) has had a lumpectomy & lymph nodes removed in her left armpit, she’s had a CT scan which is clear & we thought thank god! Now after consultation we realise there is a long long journey ahead, chemo for 7 sessions(3 week apart) then radiotherapy after that(5 days a week for 5 week), the consultant says it’s because of the type of cancer as it was a grade 3 tumour, cancer was found in 3 of the 18 lymph nodes but hadn’t spread. So they put stats on a computer screen, no chemo 42% survival over 10 years! Chemo 67% survival! Then these extra drugs can try where basically send her into early menopause etc can add another 5%! Not exactly the % I wanted to see! But nowhere was radiotherapy mentioned to what % this could add to survival, I asked & was told this wasn’t included in the computer program, we are so scared about everything as with her age it’s basically trying to stop it coming back.
Hi Overrising, sorry to hear of your girlfriends situation. I too had a lumpectomy and sentinel nodes removed. Out of the 2 sentinel nodes removed 1 has come back positive so I now need another op to remove the rest of the lymph nodes. I know its a worrying time. I had invasive ductal carcinoma, grade 3 with ER+/PR+ and HER2+. You mentioned your girlfriend was grade 3 too, was hers also fuelled by hormones and HER2? I will also be having chemo, radiotherapy and hormone treatment. I have been trying to keep positive which I know can be difficult in this situation. It is a rollercoaster ride but I have also tried to accept the situation too as my consultant and all the others involved have so much knowledge and will give the best treatment possible for each individual as its no longer one treatment fits all, its all very much tailor to each individuals need for their situation. Try to be strong and support each other. The online forums are a great way to stay in touch with so many people going through a similar journey and to help support each other.
Hugs to you both, cuffcake x x x x x
Forgot to say, if you click on peoples names, some have set up their biography to help others see what has happened along their journey. This you may find helpful when looking at others messages.
Hi thanks so much for replying, yes hormones but hers HER2 negative, your bio sounds so similar to what we’ve been through, such a stressful time, think it’s nice to just hear from others going through the same, did you have a drain after surgery? That was all a bit of a nightmare with the bag etc but we got through it & the whole chemo thing is very daunting, you read all these booklets with side effects & scares the hell out of you, thanks again for your reply & really hope everything goes ok with your surgery then you can get to where we are now waiting for chemo & the next step of the rollercoaster xx
Remember the 10 year statistics based on drugs from over 10 years ago. Cancer treatment for breast cancer has benefited enormously from research and even stage 4 BC is now often treated as chronic illness, not death sentence it may have been 20 years ago.
Thanks for your reply really appreciate it, consultant actually put those stats up in front of us yesterday which I thought was a bit harsh when we are trying to be positive, like you say I know the chemo drugs have changed along the way so you saying that has made me think actually yes you’re right there
Hi Overrising, I didn’t have a drain first time but this time I will for a few days. I know what you mean about the chemo it is scary when you read all the side effects and then it adds to your mind worrying again. I wish you luck with this next stage.
