Just wanted to say hello and thanks in advance for all the help and support I feel I will find on this site. Having been diagnosed with lobular breast cancer back in February, fortunately picked up early from a routine mammogram, I have my lumpectomy surgery coming up this Tuesday. I have already been put on letrozole, which was how I found this forum. I was trying to work out which of the weird symptoms are normal. At 63 I have already gone through menopause, so was a bit disheartened to find the hot flushes are back! And now I have read something about avoiding grapefruit juice? Anyone know what that’s about? Not that it’s a particular favourite but it would be just like me to suddenly get a craving now!
luck an best wishes to everyone out there.
I love grapefruit and used to eat half every morning. So many drugs seem to say avoid grapefruit so to my dismay, had to stop my intake. I am also 63, post menopause, getting the flushes again! We CAN do this. I'm on Cycle 4 of FECT following lumpectomy and sentinel node removal. Having Herceptin injections for a year, Radiotherapy plus Anastrazole tablets for few years, all to prevent reoccurrence due to my Oestrogen receptive and HER2 positive. Jo x
Thanks for the heads up! I’ll stick with the oranges then. Sounds like we might be in a similar situation. I’m oestrogen positive, which was another “what?” Moment, as I had both ovaries removed ten years back. Still not sure I understand how I can be making oestrogen, but the experts say I can, so that’s that. I am apparently looking at radiotherapy and letrozole to knock mine on the head, but, of course that all hinges on what the surgery turns up . I suspect the waiting between the surgery and the follow up appointment will be the longest few days of my life. But you are right we CAN do this. Vonny x
It must be frustrating to be getting flushes again. We do make a bit of oestrogen elsewhere in our body even when our ovaries have stopped working and your letrozole is mopping that up. I think grapefruit juice interacts with certain chemo drugs. Common hot flush triggers are caffeine, alcohol, sugar, spicy food and getting overly hot for any reason. x
Now I’m confused. Ot to worry, it’s no big sacrifice for me to avoid grapefruit…just in case. X
The drugs I gather grapefruit interacts with are specifically chemotherapy, not the hormone therapy drugs. Am sorry if I confused you. I wrote something else tonight and realised that my chemo brain is still hanging around for now!
Hi Cotton dust. I also have my surgery on Tuesday, here's to it going well for both of us, we've got this! Xx
Hi Cotton dust,
Hope your surgery went well and you are ok today. I got home about 8 pm last night and was a bit sick but feeling ok today. Painkillers are doing the trick.
Wishing you a speedy recovery.
Jo
