Hi

I was diagnosed with breast cancer DCIS last summer and had a mastectomy and reconstruction with an implant at the same time. I was lucky and did not have to have any further treatment. I am on Letrozole for 5 years though, which I am struggling with. 5 months down the line, I feel very down and tearful.  I have no reason to feel like this as I was lucky it was caught early and the surgery went well. However, in the last month, I have gone from feeling really positive and upbeat to feeling low. Is this a normal post cancer diagnosis effect?

Thanks

  • Hi Thorpie

You’re further down the track than I am as I’ve only just been diagnosed with DCIS and what you’re feeling probably is normal. It’s a bit like the grief cycle (if you Google it). Hopefully someone will advise you who is in the same situation as you but I did have a thought: I am a nurse and I have audited patients vitamin D levels and everybody drops their levels this time of year which can make you feel depressed. Vit D is the only supplement we should all take every winter, if you haven’t been taking it then I’d recommend 1000iu a day until April (when the sun does the job for us).

    Hi.
Thank you for your reply. Wishing you lots of love and strength with your treatment. I hadn’t thought about vitamin D so thank you for that. I will check the vitamins that I take to ensure that I take enough. It’s probably an accurate assessment as I do suffer from lack of sun! My treatment was really good and the reconstruction is amazing so you will be fine. Please do message me if you need any help, advice or just to ask questions. XX
