I am diagnosed with DCIS high grade and following mri likely to have mastectomy (biopsies done to confirm). I am a music teacher and my speciality is cello (taught and performed all my working life).

It has just dawned on me this will affect my playing and I’m wondering if there are any other cellists out there who have been through this and might know how things typically pan out and what impact of prosthetics or reconstruction might be…..

thanks awfully and sorry for the rather niche question!!!

Hi, I have been diagnosed with high grade DCIS also. I am due to have a lumpectomy next Friday.

Were  you offered a mastectomy immediately, or were you given a choice?

    Regards,

    Sue.

Hi Bird Lover 1975, I wonder if there are any specialist physiotherapists who could help answer your question about cello playing after breast cancer treatment. It might be worth phoning the Macmillan helpline to ask about where to get specialist advice -  I'm sure you aren't the first cellist (or string player, or for that matter any musician) to want this kind of information.

    Wishing you all the best.

Initially they were adamant it would be lumpectomy but the mri showed 9cm of abnormal tissue- hence now looking like mastectomy. They did more biopsies this week to check. with that size I think mastectomy is the only option. (Original lump was 21mm so they didn’t want to do mastectomy for that.)

    Thank you for your reply.

    I wish well going forward.

  • Hi Biddygirl. I’m also a cellist and scheduled for surgery (partial reduction) on right-breast soon. Wondering what the impact is going to be for playing (and practicalities of transporting/carrying!? I realise your posts were quite a long time ago now, what was your experience and what advice/tips do you have.
