If you want to specifically reply to someone it's best to do it on the thread they are on so that they are more likely to see your message. You have started a new thread to reply to Jan so it's likely she didn't see it.
If you use @Jan a drop down list will appear that you click on and that way Jan is most likely to see your message. You do the same every time you want to message a particular person. So if you wanted to message me you would do @Godwilling and click my name a icon from the drop down box.
