Hi

I have just joined the forum.  Back in April I had a left side mastectomy and am post all treatment. I am finding that I do not yet feel comfortable being with people in general, only really my husband.  I would like to chat with other people in the same position.

Hi Whitestar - I haven't had reconstruction.  I have pretty much accepted my surgery.  I haven't got the stage of buying a new bra and prosthetic or any of that yet.  Still anxious about going out and about. x

  • Ah ok. I’ve been told I get prosthesis in 6 weeks through Macmillan cancer. although the hospital gave me a softie but my surgeon doesn’t want me to wear a bra yet.  It’s all a bit surreal. I see him again on Friday so will see what he says then. It’s all a bit new to me just yet x

I want to sort out a prosthesis before I feel confident going out.  I'm just not sure of the best way to go about it.  I'm too anxious to leave the house to be honest.  I have an appointment with my consultant 10th September and will take a list of questions with me. x

  • I’m in Northern Ireland so I’m not sure if it’s the same over where you are but i make an app in 6 weeks once swelling has gone down with Macmillan cancer research in belfast and they fit me with a bra and prosthesis. Although I hope to wear my own bras too. Sorry you feel so anxious. Hopefully your surgeon will be able to answer your questions or I would contact your breast nurse. Mine has been amazing!  X

  • Good evening Daisy dame,

I live in Northamptonshire and had my right side masectomy 7th April last year and had my appointment with the prosthesis lady at the hospital on 20th July. Think it was delayed because of Covid.  She was very helpful. Gave me different types and sizes to try. I took a masectomy padded unwired bra with me and also a close fitting vest top. I was very surprised how realistic it looks. All of my family know and most of my friends, I tried to keep it quiet at first but realised I needed their love and support.

You will be surprised how much confidence the prosthesis gives you. I'm sure if you tell them at the next appointment that you would like a fitting soon, they would arrange it.

I also brought myself a lighter one for swimming.

I still wear my softie sometimes as well.

    Wishing you well.

    Hi Bobby J

Thank you so much for your response.  I spoke to someone on the Cancer Helpline yesterday - she gave me some reassurance and recommended a lingerie shop that specialise in fitting ladies for post mastectomy bras.  I will speak to the breast care nurses about my concerns - now that I have decided to face up to my concerns I feel better about it all.  As you say, keeping quiet does not help and asking for love and support is so necessary. x

    Take care

    Daisy dame.
