I'm being treated for triple negative breast cancer - the hair falling out issue.

I'm halfway through the first part of my treatment for this - weekly chemo for twelve weeks, so my hair started falling out after the first cycle ( carboplatin and paclitaxol week 1, then paclitaxol weeks 2 and 3). I had it cut before I started treatment but it wasn't very nice finding hair falling out - especially when I was cooking, so I wrapped my head in a scarf.  I've got a wig now - I went on mynewhair.org.uk to find a salon near me and I went for a consultation and they ordered a box of suitable wigs. Then I went with my daughter for a trying on session and we all liked the same one best.

I think of it as my hair not my wig and it is fantastic. A friend came round who hadn't seen me for a couple of weeks and thought I'd had my hair done. Also the hairdresser clipped what's left of my hair down to about 2 or 3mm so the falling out problem is not an issue. I just wish I had decided to get one sooner and then I wouldn't have had that couple of weeks feeling a bit horrible and moulting. I think I was slightly in denial although in my head I knew it would happen. I feel much better and more confident now and it is better than my real hair and much quicker and easier to put on than a scarf. I don't go out and about much but when I see my family or do a Zoom meeting or even just catch sight of myself in the mirror I feel OK. It does cost a bit, but they vary in price and if you normally spend money in the hairdressers it kind of evens out. Not hot, itchy or scratchy. Hope this helps if you are trying to decide what to do.

  • Hi

Thanks very much for taking the time to tell everyone here how you've got on with wearing wigs. I'm sure others who are facing the prospect of losing their hair will find this very informative.

    Wishing you all the best
