Hi

Has anyone had water retention following the last chemotherapy session.  My legs are really painful and any advice would be so welcome.

Sillysan

  • Hi Sillysan welcome to the forum. I dont know if that is ok or not but if my legs were that painful and swollen I would be giving the chemo unit a ring and asking them to check this out for you or your GP . You cant go around feeling like that and you can get medication to remove the fluid but you do need to seek medical support for that.

  • I got water retention with docetaxel, swollen hands and feet mainly. I would speak to your oncologist/BCN about it but I mentiined it again when I was discharged (I had chemo first so this was 4 months after chemo) and they said it was early days and getting rid of water retention would take time. They didn't offer anything for it!

Do speak to your team though as they will know whether they need to see you, especially if you are really sore from it.

  • Hi Sillysan, sorry this is troubling you. I’ve had a little water retention after 2 Docetaxol cycles and spoke to my BCN about it. It’s not severe but I was keen to make sure they knew about it and to see if there was anything else I could do to prevent it, or stop it getting worse.

I’m so far managing it by drinking even more water - which might not sound right but makes you go to the loo more and gets more water out! Also raising my feet at every opportunity, including when I initially go to bed. I put them on two pillows for as long as they stay there. I also find that putting my legs up against a wall for 10 mins helps too.

As others have said, if it’s sore speak to your doc/nurse or GP. There are medications that can help if needed.

Hope you get it sorted and soon xx
