Hello everyone, I'm new to the group.
Three weeks ago I had a consultation with my breast surgeon who told me I need a mastectomy on my right breast. I'm struggling to make a decision on the best way forward, for me.
I have a DCIS which is in the same breast that was operated on two years ago with a wide incision. Having already had radiotherapy, I cannot have another bout.
I've been offered a mastectomy with flat closure, LD Flap, or Implant.
Does anyone have an opinion on their own experiences that they can share? I am leaning towards flat closure because I don't like the idea of the implant or the LD flap. Why cut into healthy skin and muscle to create something that still is not a breast? I'm 65, fit and active with small breasts. However, I'm worried that I won't be able to look at myself with one breast and an ugly scar. I am fairly body concious and have not been reassured by looking at photos of flat closures on the internet. I'm trying to get my head into the right place for acceptance.
Many best wishes to you all.
Hi Enstone
First of all, I'm so sorry you.find yoursel here, but I'm sure you'll get lots of support.
I was diagnosed with high grade DCIS in my left breast in February this year. After lots of tests, scans and biopsies I was told that because the area was large, 6cm, the best option was a Mastectomy.
Like you I was offered reconstructive surgery at the same time. However the waiting time for the surgery was going to be months, rather than a few weeks for the Mastectomy with no reconstruction.
Although I had considered reconstruction I really didnt want to wait, so went ahead without reconstructive surgery in April
I dont regret it. The surgery was straightforward with no real issues, and 3 months on I'm fully recovered and feeling great.
I'm not going to lie, it took me a long time to look at the scar, and there were lots of dark days. But in time i got used to it, I use bio oil and MooGoo daily, something i thought I'd never be able to do. I'm feeling confident with my prosthesis and so, so grateful that the cancer is gone.
I'm not sure if that helps, but I hope you can come to the right decision soon.
Joyce
