Hello. Just.over 2yrs ago I had high grade DCIS and had mastectomy with immediate.implant reconstruction. I had been having my 2nd mammogram on other side a few months ago all came back clear. However on my reconstructed side I felt a lump to the reconstructed side. After a biopsy the results show stage 2 breast.cancer. yesterday I found out and my mind was in a panic. I dont understand having reconstruction how it's there. So now lymph nodes slightly raised and have to wait for CT and bone scan then treatment plan in place.

  • Hi Deni21

Welcome and sorry to hear that you have been diagnosed with Breast cancer on your reconstructed side. It’s hardly surprising that your mind is in a panic.

Best of luck with your CT and Bone Scans. If you have any questions about either of those scan I’ll be happy to answer them as I have had those scans a couple of times after I was diagnosed with breast cancer last year.

    Best wishes

Hello Daisy53, sorry to hear about your diagnosis hope you are  on the road to recovery. Yes regarding the scans I'm not sure what to expect apart from lying in a tunnel machine its the waiting that is quite hard and have mixed emotions. Keep on touch Deni21 x

    Hi

So sorry to be reading this. I thought that if you had a mastectomy that the cancer would not come back in that breast???

  • Hi Deni21

When I had my CT Scan I had to drink a litre of water over 90 minutes. The water contained a special fluid which helps to sow up the different organs in your body. I was also given an injection of contrast during the scan. The CT Scan took about 15 minutes.

Before you have your bone scan you will be injected with isotope which is a radioactive substance. You will need to wait for about 2 hours before getting your scan and the scan itself will take about 30 minutes.

    Hope this help you.

    Best wishes

  • No sadly not which is why surgeons are so keen to offer lumpectomies where possible- there is very little difference in the outcomes for both operations, in terms of recurrence. In a mastectomy it is impossible to remove all the breast tissue, so there is always a chance of the cancer returning.

Not once when I had discussions with my consultant and BCN about what I should have did they once advise me of this after even saying that if I have a mastectomy I know that it won’t come back in my boob. Why do they not check that boob as you just have a mammogram on your other boob after a mastectomy. Xx
