Hi Folks.  Have been reading some of your postings, and feeling quite calm knowing I'm not alone. I'm Hormone Negative and Her2 Positive and ultrasound said lymph nodes were clear and nurse so far has said it will be mastectomy, chemo for 3 to 6 months,  and Herceptin for 1yr.   She has since called after the weekly team meeting and said they may take lymph nodes  away too.

I have yet to see the doc (7th June) when my surgery date will be discussed. I really can't think of any questions to ask and freeze when the nurse asks, and just say nothing. Don't know if it's because I really can't think of anything, or if it is shock. I don't think it's the latter, but I really don't feel angry, or sad, or any thing else.  I believe in fate  and you deal with what life gives you positively.  Had clear mammogram in Sept 20 so didn't even think about this diagnosis.  I went to doc with a persistent cough. He sent me for X Ray then later for CT scan as they thought there was slight emphysema.  It was the respiratory doctor who saw the 15mm tumour and sent a referral to breast clinic. The ultrasound showed 5 smaller tumors spread over 6cm area, hence the mastectomy. So what started as nothing really escalated pretty quick.

What is going through my head is this.  Am I the only one who would rather they take both breasts away altogether?

  • hi ceegee

welcome to the forum      sorry you find yourself here     !   no  you ae definitely not the only one thinking  take them both away    i think  talking to others this is quite a common thought    however as you speak with your team more you may feel you have more information to make a choice about that   they dont usually agree to  removing the  healthy one    at the same time  but it can be arranged later    usually  after speaking  to a psychologist    it  reduces chances of cancer in second breast but doesn't remove risk completely and i think they want to be sure you  understand that

dont worry   if you have no questions    most breast care nurses  will take calls   outside of appointments  if you think  of query    after your meeting

  • I too have asked to have both breasts removed as this is the second time in 10 years in the same breast it has come back. There also seems to be family history. Mum sister 2 nieces and 1 cousin all diagnosed with breast cancer in their 40 & 50. Consultant only wants to take the one breast off,but I really don’t want to be in this position in another few years time, not sure where to go with it.

  • Sorry to hear your going through this.  I too have various family members that have had breast cancer.  Some are still here today, alas others not. I hope you can persuade your surgeon as its your body and mental state and this should be taken into consideration. I don't want my healthy breast removed for fear of cancer though.  I am fiendishly bothered by things not being right. My family laugh at me always straightening and aligning things. The thought of being physically "unbalanced" is really starting to pray on my mind and causing sleepless nights.  To the point I'm considering telling surgeon that I won't have any surgery if he doesn't remove both, and taking my chances with Chemo and Herceptin.
