Hello I was diagnosed with lobular breast cancer and had a mastectomy and node clearance just over two weeks ago on my left side. I am still quite sore but wondering if it’s still too early to start driving again as I feel I want to just be able to go out as I am a single parent and nobody drives in my house.

  • Hi Jenhen

Wekcome and sorry to hear that you have been diagnosed with breast cancer. As I don’t drive I wouldn’t know the answer to that. I suggest that you ring your breast cancer nurse to ask if you don’t get any answers  from the ladies on this forum.

    Wishing all the very best.

    Best wishes

  • Hi there

The key thing is can you do an emergency stop safely (without damaging you or anybody else!!).  If you can then crack on.

I was fine to drive withion a couple of weeks of my mastectomy btw, but we are all different...

    Drive safe!

Thankyou I think I will see if I feel comfortable doing short trips and if I am not then wait until I am. X

  • Hi , when I asked my surgeon about driving (about a couple of weeks after lumpectomy on my left breast) I was told it was a matter for me to decide whether I felt I could safely drive or not.  I have an automatic car so I didn't need to worry about constantly changing gears and I felt I could turn the steering wheel perfectly comfortably and safely so I went ahead and started driving and it was fine.

So if you feel you can safely manouver your car without causing yourself pain then I would start with a short trip and see how you feel.  Any pain when you are driving and I would  drive back home and wait a while longer.

Wishing you all the best xx
