Hi
My first day here. I find it comforting albeit sad to read everyone's story.
I am a little confused and upset today. I had my wire excision 4 weeks ago for dcis around 10mm.
I went for my results yesterday and was told it was larger than anticipated so he took off more, and got the 1cm clear margin top and bottom but only 0.5cm side to side. So I will have an MRI in a few weeks once I am at 6 weeks post op.
is this normal to have another dcis op? Should he have got it all out? I am not keen on a mastectomy and he didn’t mention one. I am upset and confused having two procedures close together. Is this normal ?
i am grateful for receiving my treatment so quickly and know the NHS work really hard esp now. But still very tearful.
Hi Glitterbee
Welcome to the forum and sorry that you have been diagnosed with Breast Cancer. Breast Cancer is very treatable these days and it's amazing what they can do for you.
It's not unusual to have two operations close together if the surgeon knows that he hasn't gotten all the Cancer out the first time. Whether or not he'll recommend a mastectomy will depend on the results of the MRI.
I find keeping my self busy doing the things I love helps a lot. There is always support out there if you need it, so don't be afraid to ask for it.
Wishing you the best of luck with your MRI and any treatments that you will have.
Best wishes

Hi Glitterbee
I needed second op, March this year. The first was straight forward lumpectomy (Wide Local Excision - WLE) but, once the removed portion of tissue was examined by Histology, it was found to have some invasive cells, very close to the edge of the tissue.
Therefore, it was necessary to have further surgery to remove more tissue to get decent border, plus it was necessary to check the relevant lymph nodes, doing Sentinal Lymph Node Biopsey (just 2 nodes removed and checked)
Unfortunately, the surgeon will never know having just looked at xrays/scans etc. It's the detailed examination of the removed tissue that will give this information, so not unusual but unfortunate if it's yourself, eh?
I have to say, I didn't have any issues having had second surgery, just a bit of 'burning' sensation in the boob and, if SLNB, some soreness near the armpit at incision line plus, when nerves come back to life, some 'chaffing' sensation on the inner arm for a short while.
Wishing you all the best for whatever treatment is planned for you
Thank you for responding. Its good to know I am not the "only one" as it can feel a bit lonely. I hope you are on the mend. I will be having an MRI scan in a few weeks as my WLE was only 4 weeks ago, Then I am hoping it just another WLE and not anything worse. Feels weird going back for the same op, I feel like I am going backwards not forward but I know this is all to help me get better in the long run. Have a lovely long weekend x
Yes, it can feel rather 'lonely' but, on here, are many in the same/similar situation so have a good understanding of what you're going through.
Keep in mind, though, that most situations you read on here are from people who have some issue or another with their treatment. A large proportion of people with breast cancer are just getting on with it, with few, or no, problems.
Yes, life can seem very unfair eh?
I hope you fare well through your treatment and can see light at the end, eh
I hope you enjoy the long weekend too. Weather is forecast to be good
