Hi McFarla welcome to the forum. The honest answer to your question is I dont know I can only say that my Breast Cancer was Lobular Breast Cancer Grade 2  and I had a Lumpectomy then 20 sessions of Radiotherapy then Hormone Blockers.

Things can change after the surgery and dependent on what they find and if any Lymph nodes are involved?

I know that  that response is short but hopefully useful for you. xxx

Hi, I was told I would not need Chemo as I have lobular and it does not respond that well to chemo but responds better to hormone blockers. It was in two lymph nodes and I had a large tumor so had a mastectomy. My surgeon said it would probably be Radio and hormone blockers. The team then decided I would need 6x chemo, I had one lot and was quite poorly so have stopped it. I am starting radio soon. I have been reading studies that say the outcome with lobular is very similar with or without Chemo. My Onco just said it was my decision. They may say you need chemo based on your age, tumor size, lymph node involvement?

Like Netax2 said, I too was told that lobular cancer did not respond well to chemo.  I would have been offered chemo because it had spread to my lymph nodes but, due to existing health conditions, the oncologist said the side effects far outweighed the benefits for me so am only having hormone blockers and radiotherapy.

Thank you for your reply. I only had one lymph node that had cancer but the consultant took them all out. I guess I'll know in a few days time! May I ask what hormone therapy you're on?

I'm hoping I won't need it! I'm 44,it was only in one lymph node and I had 3 tumours but were small. Only a few days to wait. But like you I have read that lobular breast cancer doesn't benefit from chemotherapy so will shall see

As I am post menopause, I am on Anastrozole which stops my body producing oestrogen.  As you are only 44 you will be on a different type which stops any cancer cells from 'feeding' off the oestrogen (I think that is how the pre-menopausal drugs work).  You may find, that when they tested your other lymph nodes after surgery, that there were very small amounts of cancer in some of the other lymph nodes.  Ask your surgeon if they took all nodes out as I was expecting them all to be removed but they only took levels 1 and 2 which left me with level 3 nodes (the ones above the collarbone).

Let us Know how you get on, they may suggest Chemo as you are younger, I am starting Anastrazol as I am post menopause, age 54. I think even though the %benefit is low for lobular if it's been in lymph nodes they want you to have chemo.

I had 10 lymph nodes out and cancer was only found in 1 xx

Sounds like they only took level 1 and 2 as I had 14 removed.  There can be 20-40 lymph nodes in the underarm area.  As you only had cancer in 1 of the 10 then it may be that they will not offer chemo and just do radio on the area to wipe up any possible stray cells.  As it was only 1 you should be offered the 5 treatment fast forward radiotherapy instead of the usual 15 treatments over 3 weeks.

    Hello me again.

No chemo which is fab news although I feel upset as I will need radiotherapy, and anastrozole for 3 years as well as some injections then tamoxifen for 7 years. I'm now worrying about the side effects of these but also 10 years! I know I should be happy and I am but can't help feel sad still xxx
