Hi everyone I'm new on this site. I was diagnosed with bc in September last year and have had 2 surgery's. I have a grade 3 31mm invasive ductal cercinoma and 2 lymph nodes were infected ER 8/8 and HER2 negative.

My main question is I had my first EC chemo session 3 days ago, after being very sick the first night and still feeling extremely nauseous I am also suffering with extremely painful acid reflux which is making it very difficult to want to eat. Has anyone got any advice to help with this reflux. I had gaviscon on liquid last night seemed to make it worse.

Sorry if my first chat is all negative I'm just finding this a bit hard to deal with at the moment.

  • Hi

a warm welcome to the online community. Sorry to hear about your nausea and reflux. have you spoken to your oncology team? They may well have drugs that can help - my treatment was a few years ago but they were always willing for people to get prescriptions for meds to counteract the side effects - I ended up being on quite a few but it made the treatment really tolerable.

Lots of people recommend gingernuts for the nausea - I used to suck sweets that a friend bought me. They do have really effective anti-nausea drugs but they are expensive so they only prescribe them if you are suffering - so make sure you let them know.

You might want to check out our breast cancer chemo thread if you haven't already - it's where everyone going through treatment gets together to share tips and support each other - you might find some suggestions there or you could ask again on that thread.

Please don't apologise for your post - we are here for it all - the ups, the downs, the inbetweens. It is indeed, a bit of a rough path at times but you'll get through and we are here to help you every step of the way!

Hope you find a solution soon and that round 2 is kinder to you

Hi ronstar, thank you so much for your reply. I do have some ginger nuts in the house I will give them a go. I have made a drink by boiling fresh ginger for 5 minutes with a bit of hunny but thus far no difference. The ginger nuts sound nicer tho so will definitely try these. I will also check out the thread you suggested.

I was having a very bad afternoon but just having your reply has helped me a lot I cannot thank you enough.

    Stay safe, Redmouse.

Hi Margaret, I'm a Maggie by the way. Thank you for your reply, I have got several anti sickness meds one of them is Domperdone but after using this one for the first time my face swelled up and went very flushed. I phoned up and was advised to stop this one and have been prescribed levomepromazine I'm to take a quarter of a 25mil table a night. I have so far chickend out from trying this one as I'm frightened of the side effects I know this may sound silly but I really don't want to feel any worse than I do. When I mentioned the acid reflux I was just told to try the usual over the counter remedies which we all have and I have used. I don't like to keep phoning them and come a cross as a winger.

Have you ever been on levomepromazine if so how was it for you.

I am so grateful for all your support its taken me ages to build myself up to come on this forum and your all being so nice. Thank you so much.

    Stay safe Redmouse. X

  • Hi RedMouse,

I also suffered with bad acid during chemo, and radiotherapy too. My oncologist and radiographer prescribed me lanzaprozole (it reduces the amount of acid in your stomach, I believe) and it did really help as I too was chomping through packs of rennies and gulping Gavison! Xx

  • Also- ondansetron sickness tablets were my best friend! X

  • Hi Maggie , I had two anti sickness meds can't remember the name of one for first five days the one I was given if I needed extra was Metoclopramide .

Thing is we're all so different in how we react so your best discussing it with your chemo unit nurse . Again everywhere is different but my unit gave me most meds for my SE . Your GP may prescribe something for acid reflux you shouldn't have to pay for over the counter .

After that all I would say is it's understandable to be wary of Se from drugs but we all just have to learn to trust our teams .

If you have a partner tell them if you are taking new med and you are worried they can then keep a check on you .

@RedMouse HI, I had my first chemo cycle last Friday and I started to have acid reflux at the end of the day. I am using a natural remedy that I make myself and it works wonders. I also think that it prevents me from being constipated from the use of anti-nausea tablets.

The mixture is made of arrowroot or kuzu (root), umeboshi plum paste and agar agar (seaweed) flakes. One tsp each mixed with cold water first and then add enough water for a full mug and boil just for 2 or 3 minutes. When cooled enough drink. I have noticed it is best to drink it before food. The items mentioned are usually used in macrobiotic nutrition and can be found online or in a good health food shop.

I hope this helps. Take care x
