Hi

I was diagnosed in October and had lumpectomy and ANC. Recovery was going great. I went for results appointment and was admitted 4 days later for further surgery as margins were insufficient and one positive tested node remained.  Recovery from second op was much less straightforward. I developed a seroma after about 10 days and have had painful reactions to numerous wound dressings - hence I still have a dressing in place 2 months after my first surgery.  I am due to start 6 cycles of chemo next week followed by 2 weeks of radiotherapy and Herceptin injections.

I have lots of experience of surgery and was not particularly anxious prior to either op - but am getting quite nervous and anxious about how I will cope with both regimens of chemo. I am due to have PICC line in advance as I have horrendous veins.  I don't know whether to expect to come home already feeling really rough after my first dose of FEC or whether the side effects tend to build up over the following days.

  • Hi

Sorry to hear that your recovery hasn't been straightforward - seromas are no fun and I'm sure you're keen to get rid of the dressing. I think it's understandable to be nervous about chemo - we've all got an image in our heads of people going through chemo and being very ill. It isn't always like that. Some people fair better than others, but there are lots of ways of dealing with the side effects and you might find you don't feel rough at all. My chemo was a few years ago but I used to feel a bit tired that day but was largely OK - there were side effects, nausea would come and go but they have pills for that. Everyone is different and we all get different side effects, but the oncology team and your BCN are always there for you and will do whatever they can to help you cope well. Having a line in makes life so much easier, so it's great that you are getting that beforehand.

Have you checked out the breast cancer chemo thread yet? It's a thread for everyone going through chemo to chat with each other about side effects and anything else - here's a LINK

Good luck with your first session next week - pop back and let us know how you got on!

Thank you Ronstar. I appreciate your response and reminder that chemo isn't always the worst case scenario that many of us probably have in their minds.  My daughter has been talking about cold caps to reduce hair loss.  I am not sure whether to pursue this it is likely to make the process of administration more complicated and uncomfortable

  • I didn't use the cold cap as it added extra time to the chemo sessions - I did get very upset about losing my hair, though so maybe I should have given it a go. Have a chat with your oncologist and chemo nurses about it if you can and you can always put a post on here asking for advice from people who have used it - lots have.
