Hi all, I'm new to the site so please bear with me.
Four years ago I had a lumpectomy followed by radiotherapy, unfortunately late November I was diagnosed with a reoccurrence. I had a mastectomy and implant reconstruction last weds (9th). I was told that the risks were high having an implant but I decided I would at least try as the thought of going flat devastated me
Everything today feels different with the implant, it feels big, swollen and hard, I'm seeing my surgeon tomorrow for him to check things out and hopefully remove the drain.
Anyone who has had what I've had, was it successful for you or not please? Any help would be greatly received.
Thank you xx
Hi, so sorry you are going through this. I had an implant 6 years ago, it does not feel like a breast to me. I think because its put under the chest wall it feels hard and def not part of me. You do get more used to it as times passes though. You will probably have some swelling from the op but this should settle, the surgeon will check it and reassure you. Sending hugs. Anna xx
Hi, thank you so much for taking the time to reply. Hopefully I will be reassured today.
Have a good day xxx
How is your implant now, if you don't mind me asking? I hope everything settled down. I am currently trying to choose between implant and DIEP and trying to find out as much as I can from others' experiences. Are you generally happy with your implant, or have there been further issues?
Hi
All is ok now thank you. It's obviously never going to be the same as a real one! I guess you get more use to it as time goes on. It certainly doesn't match my left side, seeing surgeon on Friday to see what he thinks but I feel I'd like it to match more so I'm hoping he will agree to surgery on my real one.
I wasn't allowed to have immediate DIEP due to having had a lumpectomy and radiotherapy four years ago but was offered an iimmediate implant and to me that was a no brainer as I was so upset to one, be told I had a reoccurrence and two, a mastectomy, i just didn't feel I could go flat.
I feel I've recovered very well. Talk to your BN and surgeon about all the pros and cons, they were brilliant with me.
I hope which ever route you choose you have a speedy recovery, best wishes xx
Thank you so much for taking the time to reply. I just can't decide what the best approach is. I hate the idea of having a plasticky thing in me, but also really put off by the major surgery of the DIEP and the long recovery. I have an appointment next week which will hopefully help with the decision.
