Getting ready for surgery

Hi I was diagnosed stage 2 breast cancer 4 weeks ago and am having surgery this week. Its been a rollercoaster month and to say Im scared is an understatement. I am terrified something may have changed in the past 4 weeks, I terrified of the surgery then the results. Plus Covid.

I know this seems a really silly concern but Ive been told to wash in octenisan wash for the next 5 days. If I have a shower/bath in the morning and evening do I use it twice a day? Can I use hair conditioner and can I use moisturiser on my skin? I know its daft in the grand scheme of things.

Any advice would be great.

  • Morning     It's not a silly question......Does it say on the container anything about frequency?. My clinic used Betanadine and I had to use it both the night before and morning of op but that was before Covid. I shouldn't think it matters how much you use it. It's to kill bugs afterall. They probably don't expect people to shower more than once a day but I remember an old man came in by taxi and he hadn't been able to bath or shower because he only had a sink at home. They delayed his op and he had to shower twice!

I hope all goes well next week. My lumpectomy was the first op I had ever had and the fear was the unknown. Afterwards I thought how daft I had been....even me, with non existent arm veins....had no problems. Cannula straight ii first time....anaesthetist was very patient, experienced and reassuring....then I was waking up in recovering over two hours later. And the recovery pain was manageable and I was home by tea time. So I know you will still worry before you go but this time next week...you might wonder what you were worried about and the cancer will be gone whatever it has done during the last four weeks which is likely to be very little.

Take care and stay safe now.

    Love Karen

  • Hi

I've just picked up my delightful pink gunk this morning and am looking forward to 3 days of utter cleanliness (am usually somewhat lax in this respect...no new towels every day!! Crazy eh).

Anyway I'll be doing the same as I did for previous 2 ops this year, using moisturiser & conditioner, if I have more than one bathe per day I'll use it both times, served me fine on previous 2 occasions, but this is just how I'm doing it.

If you want 'proper' answer you could call your BCN or teh hospital.

Good luck with surgery and results.

  • Thank you both for your advice. I'm over thinking this. Ill use it twice a day and end up looking like a wrinkled up prune.

  • Hi , just wanted to wish you well with your forthcoming operation .It will all be over before you know it. I am sure all the staff will reassure you and ensure that you are taken care of throughout and after the operation. When I had my op. in April this year I just had to shower that morning as usual but not use anything scented. Take care and stay safe .-sending big hugs xx

Hi Magtie,  you’ve got absolutely nothing to worry about. I had my lumpectomy last Thursday and I am fine, obviously I’m at home recovering though.  Honestly if I can go through this anyone can! As for the special antibacterial wash, I used it the night before and the morning I went in.
Hope it goes well. You will be fine, if you need to chat about anything get in touch Relaxed️ Xx

  • Thank you for the kind words everyone. The waiting is awful and everything seems worrying even bacterial wash haha! xx

  • Good luck for your op, am primed for mine shortly, know we'll both be fine & dandy and look on the bright side...no more horrible octenisan and needing fresh clothes & towels.  I now have no clean towels in my whole house!

I've just had my surgery, 3 December, and other than a problem with the drain catching a nerve, it was not bad at all.  Other than the occasional nerve twinge, no pain to speak of, just a bit of numbness under arm.

  • Hi , Glad to hear that you have had your surgery and apart from the drain catching a nerve all is going well. Sending you big but gentle hugs XX
