Hi

does anyone know how soon before a flight that you should put the flight stockings on and how long to keep them on after. My flight is only 3 hours so not so long but this is the first time I have had to wear flight stockings  so not too sure about them. I have been taking tamoxifen since February this year and have not had too many side effects yet but I am a bit nervous about the flight. Instructions on the packet say half an hour before the flight but I wondered if it needed to be longer whilst on the medication.

Hi Tilly, I'm also on tamoxifen ,only been on it a month so far, but we flew 4and a half hours,  I put mine on before we checked in at the airport , then took them off about a hour after we landed, not sure if this is any help, have a great holiday ,Amanda xx

Hi Amanda, it's good to have some idea of the length of time I need to wear them so thanks for that.

With my arm compression sleeve I was recommended to wear it in the morning before we set off and right until the evening. She even said to wear it the next morning. So I did the same with my flight stockings! Have a good trip, Tilly

Funnily enough I was only saying to my husband yesterday that I plan to wear the stockings I was given in hospital when we fly in July.  I wasn't sure how long you needed to wear them before or after so any advice is welcome.  Denise xx

I was told that I must go and be measured for a compression sleeve for the arm and always wear it when flying, I wasn't told to wear flight socks but have always worn them for long flights.

    Dear Monika

I had surgery in October, node clearence both sides. Why have you been told to get a compression sleeve? I a flying in a couple of weeks and was wondering.

Shirls65, my surgeon and nurse adviced me to wear flight stockings because of the higher risk of dvt when taking tamoxifen. I was also advised to take a soluble aspirin before the flight, drink lots of water and to keep my legs and feet moving as much as possible.  They did say not to worry toouch though as it's just a short flight.

  • I've been told to wear my compression sleeve for flying too. I've always worn flight socks if going on a long journey - have done 24 hour coach journeys in the past and they were essential for those. I got fluid in my arm after the surgery and got referred to a lymphoedema clinic, I wear a compression sleeve every day so would automatically wear it for flying. I don't think you need to get one if you don't have lymphoedema
