Hi

does anyone know how soon before a flight that you should put the flight stockings on and how long to keep them on after. My flight is only 3 hours so not so long but this is the first time I have had to wear flight stockings  so not too sure about them. I have been taking tamoxifen since February this year and have not had too many side effects yet but I am a bit nervous about the flight. Instructions on the packet say half an hour before the flight but I wondered if it needed to be longer whilst on the medication.

just wondering if it would be the same for me I am on letrozole but no-one has said to me about wearing stockings whilst flying

  •  Wearing flight socks is a sensible precaution anyway regardless of whether you have had surgery or are on any of the BC drugs. It's recommended in general if you are sitting for any long periods of time and can't get up to move around a lot. If you are concerned your breast care nurse or GP should be able to help with advice. In my case I had a DVT at the beginning of my chemotherapy so shall be taking lots of precautions next time I fly.

I wonder if it's different from surgeon to surgeon. Mine was adamant that I should be measured for a compression sleeve straight away and wear it on every flight, short or long.

I don't have lymphodema. I had a lumpectomy and lymphnodes but I had no drains.

Your situation does not seem to be so serious, so you just need to do what the doctor says: put on men's flight compression stockings before boarding the plane, and you can choose to take it off after getting off the plane. Move your legs and feet as much as possible to avoid swelling.

  • As a varicose vein sufferer, I’ve always worn flight socks when flying, and put them on when I get up that morning. But if you’re on Tamoxifen DVT’s are a slightly increased risk so yes, I would put them on as you get up that morning and keep them on till you’re out of the airport after your flight.

  • For long journeys where you are seated ie. by plane, train, driving compression socks are to prevent dvt. It’s a general recommendation. Definitely drink plenty of water to maintain hydration, do inflight exercises and wear your flight socks from leaving the house.
