I'm 18 days post op theraputic mamoplasty and 7 lymph nodes removed had my results yesterday clear margins 1 lymph node showed microscopic cancer but low enough to be considered negative will need radiotherapy but no chemo its the best posible results we could of hoped for so I should be over the moon right? but im not i just feel really sad and teary

I got my call back for mamogram in April and since then I've been backwards and forwards to the hospital for appointments and tests and results ive got my last appointment with my surgeon in six weeks and waiting on oncology which might not be until December so I kind of feel like after all the attention ive just been left to my own devices I dont think it helped that at my results yesterday my surgeon was running late and just ran in told me the results whilst I was having my dressings changed and ran out again normally he sits down with you and goes through everything in detail so I kind of feel cheated as I was expecting a proper sit down face to face

Anyone else feel sad even after good results or am I just being silly?

  • You are not being silly. Here have sticky Star go on, put it on.

It is easy to forget what we are going through while we are going through it. It's only when we pause that we come face to face with it.

Please remember the twang factor... your physical, emotional and mental resources have been s.t.r.r.r.r.e.t.c.h.e.d and eventually ping back. Confusingly, this may be during a good phase, when you are doing well and feeling great TWANG! Weak, fragile, sad and generally useless. Perfectly normal but strangely not often talked about. Forewarned would be forearmed.

I can understand you feeling cheated out of an important talk with your surgeon. It is difficult to digest and then process news, even good news and you should have had an opportunity to raise questions.

It is also difficult to transition from being a patient, a name on many lists, waiting for appointments, attending appointments to ... what?

You are still on this journey but you have pulled into a station. Be kind to yourself, don't expect too much, hey, there may even be a nice view.

    Good luck

  • That is such an accurate answer. I felt the same when my chemo finished. Seeing the same nurses every week for six months they become friends. When you stop going because the treatment has worked there is a gap in your life. That is sad.

It is good news and you will twang back again. This is just a stage in the healing process.

Three times! What did I do?
