Morning all
i had a lumpectomy 10 days ago. Bandages were removed 8 days ago and there was no gauze just tape on my nipple area. When the nurse removed the bandage the nipple started oozing. She put a new bandage with gauze on it but said she has never seen it bandaged like that and took pictures to show my consultant. She told me to remove it if it becomes irritating. Yesterday i asked my daughter to remove it as it was curling up and chaffing my skin. Nipple started bleeding again, not alot but bleeding . Is this normal?
I know I should contact my nurse but I get the feeling from the nurses that they get annoyed from my questions. So I don’t like contacting them. I have an app on the 15th for the lymph nodes results and will try and leave the bandages on till then if I can bear them.
Has anyone else removed their bandages themselves and after how long please. Thank you this forum really helps me
Confused and in pain
Hi Toffie
Pleased don’t be afraid to contact the nurses. They shouldn’t be annoyed, they are there to help, and it shouldn’t be bleeding 10 days out from surgery.

I'm afraid you need to go and get sorted. The BC nurses will be able to do that. They are busy but sorting you out and answering questions is their job. There are alternatives though. The dreaded A&E but they might redirect you. Have you tried your GP. Again they will probably redirect you but if you plead your case and the hospital is a long way they might help. I have in the past gone to the McMillan centre at the local hospital. I had to just go and wait but I did get seen. You have to be receiving treatment which you are.
Doing these things yourself is never a good idea. There is no back up if something goes wrong.
Speak to the team on here is another option but I am Quite sure they will say the same thing, you need to be seen.
On the bright side my Dad always said when a scan itches it means it's healing.
Three times! What did I do?
Hi Coddfish/silverberg
i took your advice and called the Cancer nurses I was told to come in immediately. The nurse removed the bandages and told me to let the wound air. Also called the consultant who treated me to check it. He said it is healing well and the bleeding is because of the bandages. It is healing and just needs some air to it. Also to get a proper bra and to get measured. I made an appointment with my local M n S for tomorrow. Thank you both your advice it means alot x
That’s excellent news. There is a boxed bra, it’s their best seller I use to buy. No wires, firm control. You need it fairly close fitting.
Good luck
