My radiotherapy finished yesterday. ( ductal carcinoma in situ stage 2 grade 3, also lymph nodes removed) Today I cant shake the feeling of exhaustion or the feeling like i want to cry. I dont know if this is normal, or if its because im on letrozole which is giving me menopause symptoms.
Could it possibly be relief? I've been very lucky with the treatment, other than having an infection just after surgery, its been pretty plain sailing.
Has anyone else felt like this? Any hints or tips on how to shake it?
Thanks for reading.
Yes, I suspect it will be all those causes! Allow yourself to cry, you’ve been through some tough time and where your body might have taken a battering, so has your mind and your emotions.
I found gentle exercise helped, I was looking after a dog while going through and after radiotherapy so regular walks helped me lots. I still try and do at least a mile each day whether with the dog or without (he’s shared between households, long story!) and of course the dog needs several walks.
I began my 3 weeks of rads still testing positive from Covid, so had to get over that first, then by the third week I felt fine, but tiredness does still hit now and then as I’m on a hormone drug too, still at least 3 more years (I’m 2 years on from the treatment start of my recurrence)
keep posting, it helps! And keep up those shoulder exercises, each and every day (probably for the rest of your life!) and regular walks too.

I think we steel ourselves. Focusing on the target of finishing the treatment. Then we get to the end and the Adrenalin or the sheer bloody mindedness just evaporated leaving us flat and emotional. Outsiders no longer see us as a cancer sufferer but as a cancer survivor. They, as we all know , are as tough as old boots.
You have just finished a very tough time. The actual process of turning up at hospital day after day is exhausting. Then for good measure they throw in a drug causing menopause symptoms. You’ll have heard of that ? It can reduce perfectly sane, intelligent woman into grovelling wrecks , sweating in a corner. Suddenly menopause is the fashionable thing that needs sorting.
There are more hints and tips out there we would all be dead before trying them all.
I am being a it flippant. I’ve been just short of collapse today. My body needed time preferably horizontal time but OH had an exciting day involving a steam train planned.
All you need is a good cry, a rest, horizontal if possible and tomorrow it will feel better. Push but not too hard. Rest when you need it an ask about drugs that deal with the hot sweats.
Hugs
Three times! What did I do?
I agree it’s probably all those things together. You have got through treatment, it takes its toll, and then it all hits you afterwards. Physically and mentally. Meanwhile everyone thinks it’s over and expects you to bounce back. Take the time to get as much rest time as you need, it will improve with time. You don’t need to pick up where you left off straight away. As Moomy says, gentle walks and fresh air help too.
