Bra post lumpectomy whilst coping with lymphodema - any suggestions?

Hello,

I have lymphodema in my arm and breast following complete lymph node removal. Despite a lumpectomy, my breast is bigger than my healthy one, due to the swelling. I find crop top style bras most comfy, but the Late Effects Radiotherapy nurse has said they aren't providing enough compression. She suggested a softie for my healthy breast, to balance the size out, so I could find a well fitting bra that offers more compression without having a gap on my good side.

I gave up on padded/underwired/clasped bras in the pandemic and have happily worn crop tops since. I just need something plain and comfy (no fuss or lace etc) which adds some decent compression. Sports bras aren't great for daily wear under tops as their shape means the straps show.

Has anyone got any ideas?

Thanks so much x

  • Morning. I had lymphedema after a lumpectomy. M&S do a bra in box. It is actually their best seller but I can't remember it's name. It doesn't have wires and it is solid enough to provide the compression you need.

To be honest not having to wear bras it one of the pluses of a double mastectomy and going flat

    Good luck with shopping.

  • I have lymphoedema in my left arm and breast and have tried lots of different bras. The most comfortable one to give enough support is the Cotton blend & lace Non wired Total support bra, I only use these now. Hope that helps. Sorry I don't know how to send the link.

  • Thank you! I'll look it up. I sometimes wish I had just gone flat - was really keen, but my surgeon said lumpectomy with radiotherapy would have marginally better clinical outcomes for my situation. I hadn't realised just how problematic the swelling would be - my neoadjuvent chemo was paused due to sepsis from my port, so I ended up having to have all my lymoh nodes removed, and have struggled with lymphodema ever since. I'm just hoping more compression will help.

Thanks for taking the time to reply to me x

  • I've tried so many too! One issue is my left side is actually bigger than my healthy side now, despite the surgery, due to the swelling - so getting a bra to fit is a nightmare. I'll have a look at the one you suggested - it's so helpful and reassuring to hear from someone who's reached the end of the seemingly never ending search for the right bra x

  • Hi, I think the one Silverberg mentioned is from the M&S total support range. I wear the non wired embroidered total support full cup and it comes in a box.  Hope this helps, best wishes

  • Hello, i have just had a mastectomy with a reconstruction and my surgeon actually said i had a good bra.

It's  a post op bra from Bravissio. I bought two and they are amazing.  Soft adjustable and front fastening.  I suggest you have a look on their website.

  • That's the one.
