Hi I am on my 2nd week of Radiotherapy,  I'm expecting 3 weeks.  Sometimes I find it difficult holding breath that u have to do. Sometimes I can but there r times,  air leaks out and just wondering if anyone else has problems with this or your experience with Radiotherapy?

I know everyone's journey is different or responds differently. I'm doing ok apart from unsettled tummy, dry mouth. Thanks for any advice.

  • Hello, sorry you’re having problems with the breath regime of radiotherapy. Rest assured that if anything isn’t totally correct, then the machine shuts down and you don’t get any radiation in error. Have the staff been able to speak to you to help you through?

I had advice to practice before my treatment started, but actually went into it still struggling after having COVID. I was a bit worried about coughing in the middle of treatment! By the last week I was able to take even deeper in-breaths, so much so that they spoke to tell me to not take quite such a big breath in! I tried to count the seconds too, but was often wrong….

hope all goes better for you now….

  • Hi

Sorry you’re having this issue, wise words from

Just wanted to add, when I was having rads and had to breath hold, I found that limiting caffeine before the session helped a bit. So I’d have my early cup of tea as usual but nothing more with caffeine, particularly coffee until afterwards. This may be of no help at all as you may not drink either but just in case! I’d also tell the radiologists that you’re finding it tricky as they can work around it if necessary. There have been posters here who have not been able to do the breath hold at all, and apparently the positioning can be adjusted. Wishing you well with your remaining sessions, love and hugs, HFxx
