Hair washing during EC chemo

Hi everyone,

I'm new here so apologise if this has been asked before.

I started EC chemo on Monday 11th and had cold cap. I tolerated it really well to the point I was convinced it wasn't cold enough Joy

The nurse sprayed my hair with a lot of water to dampen and applied a cheap Alberto Balsalm coconut conditioner.

I've brushed through the ends day and night very gently to avoid damage and there is not matting etc. I gently put up in cotton scrunchies at night along with a silk bonnet and silk pillowcase underneath in case bonnet ever shifts.

I've not washed my hair yet and have brought a Child's Farm hair wash and a separate leave- in conditioner.

Think I would like to try and wash my hair today but am scared to! Has anybody got any hints/tips?

I was told just to gently pat shampoo on to my hair but I'm worried about rinsing it. Should it be cold water or luke warm and just have a gentle shower?

Sorry for the long winded post. I just feel so nervous about this first hair wash xx

  • I’ve been cold capping and I’ve had my 12th treatment today, 4 more to go! I’ve designated Sunday and Wednesday as hair wash days (treatment day is Friday)   I use the Philip Kingsley shampoo and conditioner that is free of sulphates etc. I wet my hair with Luke warm water, put the shampoo/conditioner in my hair (pat it on gently) with no vigorous rubbing and when I’m out I drape a micro fibre hair turban on my head to absorb as much of the water as possible. I will then give it a gentle comb through with a wide tooth comb. I used to wash my hair every day so washing twice a week is torture! Good luck!

  • Thank you for your advice. I've pretty much done what you have said. I've washed twice since my first session and am now getting quite a bit of shedding but it doesn't seem noticeable at the moment.

Once I washed it because the itching was so bad I needed the cool water to settle it.

My next treatment is Monday so hoping that the cold cap helps to slow the shedding down

  • I remember I lost quite a bit to begin with (not noticeable by anyone else) but had thick hair so could afford to lose some. It then settled down and although was still losing some every day, it was only small amount. This was with 3 months of paclitaxol and carboplatin. The crown of my head still has hair but it is very thin. Last week I started 3 weekly EC and do think the shedding has increased….time will tell.

  • I didn't cold cap. When I was talking to oncologist she warned that people who cold cap often keep their hair until EC. Then once that starts they are upset when the hair starts to fall out.

I didn't loose any during EC and my eyebrows started to grow. Mine is still very short, curly and dark grey.I look like a Herdwick sheep. OH strokes it as he walks past!

Three times! What did I do?

  • I’ve heard EC is harsher on the hair. My thinking is I’ll do the cold cap only if I think it’s still worth doing. If I get to the point where I think I’ve lost too much hair I’ll stop. I’ve got half way through my chemo treatment with hair so far so that’s a bonus Grinning.  The eyebrows are just about hanging on…very thin and sparse!

  • I haven't had a great deal of energy but I've enough to do small jobs from stopping me going insane. Sailed through chemo. Awful time with surgery.

Today I've been clearing my make up drawer. Love the stuff, spend a fortune on it. I've thrown out my eyebrows pencils I used through chemo. I didn't like my usual pencil type it looked too flat and solid. Amazon do some like felt tip pens that have multiple nibs. You draw in separate hairs but few at a time. Not expensive ,about £12. The holes for the hair follicles are still there so you can see the shape to guide you with a decent mirror. If you start now by the time they've all gone you'll be skilled at painting them in.

It's sixteen weeks since my last EC and I've got hair everywhere I use to have!

    Kissing heart

  • It sounds like I bought the same one as you. Only use it if I’m going out but it’s great, you can’t tell they are drawn on.
I’ve been up and down with chemo but my favourite saying is, it could be worse! 3 more EC chemos for me then surgery planned for the end of August, then radiotherapy.
I was hoping some of my hair WONT grow back Joy…..we shall see!

  • The first hairs I noticed growing back were the ones I call weirwolves. They are more like spines than hair. They grow about 1cm a night, thick and dark with ability to go invisible. Until OH spots it as I'm  about to go into the pub.

I've tried my hair this morning for the first time. When I looked it was all pointing straight up like GI Joe.

I use to play a game on EC. How fast can I get my pee  back to normal colour. If finish treatment at 12.00 Friday and liked to be pink free by 5.00pm. Obviously I didn't sleep much on the Friday night.

  • My daughter gave up with the cold cap at the third EC session. She truly hated it, would say it was the worst part of chemo, and had lost 80% of her hair by then. She was much happier 'taking control' and getting her hairdresser to remove the final wispy strands. She had a wig very like her natural  shoulder length long bob, but hated it - although I thought it looked good. She actually lost all body hair, including eyebrows and lashes.  But she developed her own style with a wardrobe of chemo beanies (Etsy is great) and statement earrings. While not happy with the way she looked, it did work.

Fast forward two years (22 chemo cycles, 3 surgeries and 15 sessions of radiotherapy) her hair is now a longer than chin length bob and thicker than ever, eyelashes and eyebrows are as they were and she's back to shaving or waxing other bits.

Very best wishes to all - try not to worry too much, you will all get through this.

  • Joy I was quite disappointed , my wee was red  when I had a wee before I left the hospital and that was it.
