BRCA 2 positive

Family history of breast cancer : grandmother (deceased),  mother, sister, cousin (deceased).

I was informed yesterday during a genetics meeting that I have tested positive for the BRCA 2 gene.  I was due to start radiotherapy following a lumpectomy and sentinel node biopsy.  They said I could be monitored via mammograms in the future, but my lobular cancer was missed on my mammogram before I found the lump during self examination.   Therefore I will be having a double mastectomy and reconstruction and my ovaries removed.  It's a lot to take in!

Anyone had anything similar?

  • Hi

I am sorry you have a BRCA2 gene defect. The surgery is indeed a lot to take in, but it does mean you are in control and can hopefully have a normal life once you are through it.

We have a BRCA positive forum you might like to join to find others in a similar situation.

    I am a Macmillan volunteer.

I have metastatic Triple Negative Breast Cancer, in remission

  • Thank you very much for that.  I shall check it out!

  • I am BRACA 2 positive and can appreciate where you are. I had my ovaries removed and then found I had BC.  I had a double mastectomy with breast reconstruction. I had implants.  This was 4 years ago.

I can only advise you work with your medical team and it will work out.

    All the very best

  • Thank you for your reply, Ricki.  I'm a little overwhelmed by the information at the moment,  yet the other side of me just wants the surgeries out of the way!

    All the best to you,

    Jo xx

  • The process is overwhelming.  My breast surgeon said that I had a tendance to over think everything. In the end I tried to take it one step at a time.

Breast Cancer Now were another support line I used.

The BRACA part was a more difficult part and I realised that support in this area is a post code lottery.  In Kent they have BRACA Kent but nothing where I live.

Having the BRACA gene brings additional questions. Again the knowledge should be where you had your genetic screening.

Keep a list of your questions and slowly you  will navigate your own path
