Peripheral neuropathy

Hi, I was diagnosed with breast cancer in January 2024. I had chemotherapy with very few side effects, which finished in July 2024. Over the last few weeks my fingertips have become really sensitive, also when out for my daily walk my hands have started tingling. I spoke to the breast care nurse today, she said it is possible to experience peripheral neuropathy many months after chemotherapy has finished. Has anyone else experienced this and do you have any advice about easing this problem?  It has come as a bit of a shock and I wasn't expecting it.

  • Hello,

I don't know enough about neuropathy caused after a delay but I do know, because my neuropathy caused permanent damage from chemo onwards, that there are links to vitamin deficiencies....B12, B6, zinc ......From the start I have had regular blood tests and take these on prescription daily. I see a neurologist every six months who annually tests electrically for nerve damage. My vitamin levels have improved but still remain, after 8 years of treatment, in the lower range of normal.

It may help you if you have your blood checked. Otherwise gabapentine also helps with nerve damage. Unfortunately this drug has had to be increased to compensate for increasing numbness, pins and needles and leg cramps.

My advice would be to not ignore these symptoms and make an appointment to have the problem checked. If the conclusion is something temporary.....great ...if not , starting treatments earlier will help halt further deterioration.

I hope you get things sorted soon.
