Hi - I just need some help before I can contact the unit on Monday. I have a UTI which paramedic at y doctors confirmed late yesterday and he’s prescribed antibiotics for 7 days. He wasn’t sure of how it interacted with Abemaciclib but a Google search said I could take with it. I promised to check on Monday as I really want to start antibiotics as I have had symptoms for 4 days.
what has anyone else done? Should I stop the Abemaciclib over the weekend whilst I take antibiotic until I can confirm it’s ok? A more detailed search said it can increase amount f Abemaciclib in body thereby increasing side effects. I have been very lucky on this drug and don’t experience severe side effects so I wonder if I am ok to carry on with both?
any experience / advice helpful x
I’m currently on both! Yes, sadly UTIs are a common occurrence for me, even before ‘those’ s/es of Abemaciclib increased the risks.
I think past experience has shown me that keeping a track of temperature especially just after you’ve finished the antibiotics course, is important. One infection took longer to clear and my temp began to go up on the last day of antibiotics so a call to 111 which ended with a lengthy visit to A&E followed, 2 doses of an I/V antibiotic later I was fine. But if temp starts to go up, I’d say stop the Abemaciclib and seek help.
hope yours clears quickly.
hugs xxx

I have been taking abemaciclib for 21 months and have had 4 UTIs which have required antibiotics. I was told that I should stop the abemaciclib while taking the antibiotics as this would help me clear the infection. I phoned the oncology nurse when I had the first one and have done this each time since. My antibiotic courses hsve been 5 days. I’m hoping to have fewer UTIs once I’m only on the letrozole. I realise that the letrozole may be predisposing me to them, but without the drag on my immune system I might clear them without needing a prescription,
I had quite a nasty bout of Covid and stopped the abemaciclib for 8 days on instruction from hospital and another time I had a bad cough hanging on and stopped for 5 days and cleared it.
All the best. xx
I’ll be interested to hear what your team think.
I’ve been lucky with the abemaciclib in that the diarrhoea and rather excruciating abdominal pain settled right down - I really thought I would not be able to cope!
As I say I’ve been advised to pause the pills when I’ve had a viral or bacterial infection in order to help my immune system. On the other hand I’ve stayed on the 150mg dose because my blood tests have been ok. I asked about reducing last autumn as the previous winter i had not been good with a long lasting cough and sinusitis and I do feel a bit weary as the time has gone on. Anyway I accepted that I was best to stay with the 150mg and hope to get through to early May without antibiotics again.
Xx
