Hair colouring after chemo - any advice?

Hello, I finished my chemo 14 months ago. I'm delighted that my hair has grown back but I hate the colour. I don't look like me any more and it's a constant reminder of treatment.
My hair is now grey - (I'm 70 years old) and it was long and blond before chemo.

Are there any reasons why I should not get my hair coloured?
I would like to get it styled but have no idea where to start - how do I find a sympathetic stylist that could recommend a style that would suite me?

  • Hi Deebee Word of mouth is usually the best. Ask your friends, if you like their hair. You could ask any woman you see if you are brave enough. Nobody is going to be rude after all you are complimenting them on their hair and choice. Then it is just a matter of going on and having a chat. You don't have to commit to anything.

Last year I was brave. I loved the way my hairdresser coloured my hair but she couldn't cut for toffee. My hair was short and the younger ones don't seem to have the skills. I went to someone older, recommended by a friend. Best haircut in years. I then went to one for colour and the other for a cut. Then it all fell out! Thank you chemo!

Remember to do patch tests, your body may react differently to how it use to.

Good luck, but remember what my dad use to say. There's only two weeks between a good and a bad haircutBlush

Three times! What did I do?

  • Once you have found a good stylist, they are the best people to ask about colour. The texture of early growth hair can be odd and they will know what products and colours are likely to work best. Your hair may gain more colour over time - I was mid/late sixties and initially came back dull white, but it eventually settled into a much nicer silver blond without me colouring it. Cut and condition make it look so much better regardless of colour.

  • If you finished 14 months ago you can definitely get it coloured, I did mine at 5 months they recommend 6 but I needed to go back to work so 5 it was! They recommend a semi permanent as it’s less harsh on the hair, I’ve stuck with that and had no issues at all xx
