Biopsy Results and Anxiety

Hi I was wondering if anyone can give me some advice. I finished treatment 3 years ago after a mastectomy (chemotherapy and radiotherapy). In December I found a lump under the mastectomy scar. After having a biopsy they have come back to say I had at least 3 areas of concern but they were all benign. I thought I would feel relieved but I actually feel even more anxious as I could only feel one lump. Going forward I'm worried this happens again and I don't feel any lumps until its too late. I'm really struggling to get my head around it. Can anyone suggest how to get past this.

  • Hi   I completely get where you are coming from.  I have some breast lymphoedema and my whole breast area is lumpy and bumpy. I have no idea when I self exam if  I am feeling new lumps or old ones.  I do my best and I get anything that really feels different checked out but I really rely on my annual mammogram.  I do think it's always going to be a worry to be honest. Maybe others here in the group will have some ideas. Best wishes

  • Hi, thank you for your message. I think that's all I can do.  I was just wondering if anyone maybe had a yearly ultrasound on their mastectomy scar or something that I could maybe ask for. Thank you x

  • So sorry to read about the biopsies - must have been frightening.
Do you still have appointments with the breast team or can you ask for one?
I was diagnosed in Oct 2024 and at my last appt raised concerns about area now being very lumpy (I also have some breast lymphoedema) and only having annual mammogram. I have dense breast tissue and what was called high burden of disease in spite of a mammogram only 17 months prior to diagnosis. The consultant I saw was very supportive and put forward a recommendation for regular MRI screening. There was also a request to help with how to examine (not heard back on that). He said ultrasound was only useful if they were targeting a specific point of concern. X

  • Hi thank you for your reply. I will speak to my nurse and see if I can have annual checks on the mastectomy scar also as well as the normal mammogram on the other side. Thank you so much x
